The one question that changed my life
Incorporating the question “Does it fit?” into your daily routine can be a powerful method to ensure every action you take aligns with your broader life goals. From my own experience, dividing my goals into four key areas—Relationships, Work, Money, and Self (including physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being)—helped me gain clarity on what truly mattered in each aspect of life. Every morning, I take a moment to write down clear objectives in these categories on a page divided into four sections. This visual reminder keeps my goals tangible. Throughout the day, whenever I engage in any behavior or decision, I pause and ask myself, “Does this behavior fit the goals I’ve set for this area?” This simple question interrupts my automatic habit loops by making me consciously aware of my choices rather than drifting on autopilot. Our brains naturally conserve energy by sticking with familiar pathways, which is why forming new habits can be challenging. Regularly questioning the alignment between actions and goals forces the brain to create new neural pathways through repetition, ultimately helping new, goal-oriented behaviors become automatic. For example, before checking my phone during work hours, I now ask if this fits my professional goals. Often, the answer is no, and I redirect my attention accordingly. By consistently applying this practice, I’ve noticed increased productivity, better financial decisions, improved relationships, and a stronger commitment to self-care. This experience has taught me that the key to meaningful change lies not in complex strategies but in the consistent application of a simple guiding question. It empowers you to break free from unconscious actions and build habits that genuinely serve your intentions and aspirations.
