Sunflower loaf for a picnic!🧺🌻
I made this loaf recently for international picnic day! #picnic #gingham #sunflower #sourdough #sourdough bread #sourdoughpainting North Carolina
Hey fellow bakers! Seeing my beautifully painted sourdough loaf ready for a picnic just fills me with so much joy. If you've been eyeing these artistic sourdoughs, or wondering how to make a show-stopping 'sun loaf' yourself, let me share some tips on how you can create your own stunning masterpiece! It’s truly a labor of love, but so incredibly rewarding. First off, a happy, active sourdough starter is the foundation for any amazing sourdough bread. Make sure yours is bubbly and well-fed before you begin your bake. For that incredible, crisp crust that holds a design so well, I usually opt for a long cold proof overnight in the fridge. This really helps develop deep flavors and gives you a firm, pliable canvas for scoring and painting. Now for the fun part: the design! Achieving that gorgeous sunflower and blue gingham pattern, like the one on my loaf, isn't as hard as it looks, I promise. After the final proof, gently turn your dough out onto parchment paper. This is where a sharp razor blade (or a specialized lame) comes in handy for scoring. For the sunflower, I start by scoring a central circle, then radiating lines outwards for the petals. Don't be afraid to get creative with your petal shapes! For the blue gingham accents, light, precise criss-cross scores are perfect. Remember, you're not cutting deep, just breaking the surface enough to allow the loaf to expand beautifully and the design to 'bloom' in the oven. The colors are what really bring this bread art to life! Instead of artificial dyes, I absolutely love using natural powders. For that vibrant blue in the gingham, butterfly pea flower powder mixed with just a tiny bit of water is fantastic. For the dark outlines, centers, or even a contrasting pattern, black cocoa powder or a strong espresso powder mixed with water works wonders. If you're thinking of adding some green leaves, matcha powder is your friend! Just mix small amounts of these color powders with a few drops of water until you get a paint-like consistency. A small, food-safe brush is your best tool here. You can paint before or after your main scores, depending on the effect you want. I find painting after a light initial score helps the design truly 'pop'. Baking it just right ensures that your beautiful design holds up and you achieve that perfect sunflower seed bread crust look (even without actual seeds, the scoring gives a similar visual texture!). Preheat your Dutch oven super hot – I aim for around 475°F (245°C). Bake covered for about 20-25 minutes, then uncover and bake for another 20-25 minutes until the crust is deep golden brown and wonderfully crispy. The steam from the covered bake helps the loaf expand beautifully and prevents the crust from setting too quickly, allowing your painted design to truly shine. This artfully painted sourdough isn't just pretty; it's a delicious centerpiece! It's perfect for any gathering, especially a picnic, and it’s always a conversation starter. Imagine slicing into this beauty and sharing it with friends and family. It pairs wonderfully with cheeses, charcuterie, or simply a good olive oil. I made mine for International Picnic Day, and it was a huge hit! Give it a try – you'll be amazed at what you can create with a little flour, water, and imagination.
