What is Dermatomyositis?
Dermatomyositis •
An inflammatory disease marked by muscle weakness and skin rash.
People may experience
Pain areas: in the joints or muscles
Skin: redness, calcium deposits in the skin, darkening of the skin, dermatomyositis, mechanic's hands (dry thick skin on palms of hands), red-purple rash with swelling on the upper eyelids and cheeks, redness around the nails, or shawl sign (darkened skin on upper back and torso)
Muscular: muscle weakness or loss of muscle
Also common: fatigue, difficulty swallowing, multiple-joint inflammation, pneumonia from inhaling oral secretions, puffy eyes, or weight loss
This is a rare autoimmune disease that I will always carry with me. It’s been 2 years since my diagnosis so I figured I’d spread more awareness. It not only affects my skin, but also weakens muscles. I was on prednisone for a year, took chemotherapy shots/pills for about 7 months, and now on a low dose of Plaquenil to keep symptoms down.
In the beginning my doctor believed that I showed signs of Celiac Disease. This is very common when it comes to Dermatomyositis. People are often misdiagnosed which leads to people becoming sicker and they’re not getting the right treatments for their disease. This is why I feel so strongly about spreading awareness about DM.
DM could also be an underlying issue from cancer. I did a lot of bloodwork in the beginning and was informed by my Rheumatologist that I carried a cancer marker which means I will have to be checked for tumor growths often. Thankfully I’ve been cleared from any tumors or cancers so far!
Please see a Rheumatologist if you believe you may have Dermatomyositis!!

Dermatomyositis is a multifaceted autoimmune disorder that predominantly affects the skin and muscles. Patients often present with symptoms such as heliotrope rash and Gottron's papules, which are hallmark signs of the condition. The diagnosis can be complicated since symptoms overlap with other diseases, like Celiac Disease. This highlights the need for precise medical evaluations from rheumatologists. In addition to the visible skin manifestations, individuals may encounter muscle weakness, pain, and chronic fatigue, significantly impacting their daily lives. Understanding the pathophysiology of Dermatomyositis also raises awareness that it may serve as an indicator of underlying conditions, including malignancies. Regular check-ups for tumor markers are vital for managing the risks associated with the disease. Effective management often includes corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents, but these come with side effects that require careful consideration. Awareness campaigns play a crucial role in early detection and treatment, as timely intervention can lead to better outcomes for those affected. Support groups and community discussions can provide emotional backing and foster a sense of belonging among those living with Dermatomyositis. Sharing personal journeys not only empowers individuals but also educates others about this rare condition. Increased awareness can significantly reduce the time to diagnosis, ensuring that those suffering receive the appropriate treatment sooner. If you suspect you or someone you know might be experiencing symptoms related to Dermatomyositis, prompt consultation with a healthcare provider is crucial. Early diagnosis and intervention can make a substantial difference in managing this rare but serious disease.
