✨ summer books and burn out

this list is more of a TBF (to be finished) list than a TBR list, because I have a terrible habit of reading multiple books at once, but not always finishing them (that's adhd, babes!). I will update at some point with my ratings.

lately, life has been feeling a little on the tiring side. I know I'm burnt out, so naturally, I'm having major art block again. i used to be really upset about not having the brainpower to draw or write or do anything creative, but now I just let it be. its not the end of the world, and no matter how many breaks I take, I will always be a creative person by nature. something will eventually call me back home, and my sketchbook, empty canvas' and word documents will always be there when im ready to create something again. and the lemon8 community will always be here when I eventually have something i'm proud enough of to share. we are so much more than what we can produce, anyway.

the best way I know how to handle a creative block is to simply live my life again. at this point, it almost serves as a reminder to pour into myself (sometimes you dont realize when your cup is empty). inspiration is everywhere for those with eyes to see. a movie, a song, a book, a memory, the sound of rain, the taste of apples and homemade lemonade, the smell of clean laundry, discovering a fabric softer than my soul, and the warmth of my snuggie fresh out the dryer. embracing the sensuality of life itself, until something sticks to my heart just long enough for me to want to immortalize it.

maybe life is just remembering where home is (within yourself).

... Read moreBurnout and creative blocks are common challenges faced by many, especially those juggling multiple responsibilities or managing conditions like ADHD. A practical way to navigate these periods is by building a 'To Be Finished' (TBF) book list. Unlike traditional reading schedules, a TBF list allows flexibility, encouraging readers to engage with different books without pressure to immediately finish them. This approach respects the fluctuating nature of focus and motivation. The books highlighted in this summer reading selection offer more than escapism. For example, philosophical fiction like the story of a middle-aged woman opening a bookshop to find solace explores themes of renewal and finding peace in life's transitions. Fantasy novels dealing with themes such as inheritance and confronting personal challenges can inspire readers to interpret their own journeys and resilience. Reuniting narratives, like that of college friends supporting each other through tough times, emphasize the healing power of connections and commitments. Such stories resonate deeply during periods of burnout recovery, reminding us of the importance of community and shared support. Embracing sensory experiences—like the scent of clean laundry, the taste of homemade lemonade, or the warmth of a favorite snuggie—can also serve as accessible sources of inspiration. These moments anchor us in the present and replenish our creative energy gradually. Ultimately, understanding that burnout is not an end, but a signal to ‘pour into oneself,’ helps reframe the experience. Creative talents remain part of us, waiting for the right time to flourish again. The use of a flexible TBF list, combined with mindfulness and self-care, can support a sustainable return to creativity and productivity.
