Was it worth saving?

Made in the 1920s by Berkey & Gay, one of Grand Rapids’ leading furniture makers during America’s golden age of fine furniture.

Sideboards like this were staples of formal dining rooms between the late 19th and early 20th centuries — symbols of prosperity and hospitality. They anchored the dining space, storing silverware, linens, and special-occasion dishes, while their heavy carving and rich veneer work reflected Old World tastes adapted for American homes.

This Jacobean Revival style — with its turned legs, detailed carving, and figured veneer panels — echoed English furniture of the 17th century but was built for modern families who wanted tradition and practicality together.

When I found this piece, its story had nearly been lost: someone had tried to strip the top and left deep scars behind. We stepped in to finish what they started — carefully refinishing only the top and preserving the rest of the original finish so the century-old patina remains intact.

A matching buffet from the same set will be joining it soon — a glimpse back at a time when furniture was crafted as heirlooms, not throwaways.

... Read moreWhen you stumbled upon an antique like my Berkey & Gay sideboard, the first question often is, 'Is it truly lost?' That's exactly what ran through my mind when I first saw its scarred top. Many pieces from the Jacobean Revival era, like this one, faced similar fates – perhaps stored in a damp basement, or worse, subjected to amateur restoration attempts that did more harm than good. But understanding their history helps us see their potential. Let's talk a bit more about what makes Jacobean furniture, and its 20th-century revival, so special. The original Jacobean period (roughly 1603-1688) in England was characterized by sturdy, often oak, pieces with distinctive turned legs, intricate carvings, and a sense of enduring craftsmanship. It was furniture built to last generations, reflecting the stability and emerging prosperity of the time. The Jacobean Revival, popular in America from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, reinterpreted these elements. While still embracing the turned legs and carved details, manufacturers like Berkey & Gay often utilized more varied woods, including walnut and mahogany, and incorporated veneers to achieve richer, more elaborate patterns. These pieces weren't just functional; they were statements of taste and heritage, designed for the burgeoning middle class who desired a connection to historical elegance. Sideboards, in particular, hold such a fascinating place in furniture history. Originally evolving from simple chests and side tables, they became indispensable in formal dining rooms. Imagine a grand dinner party where all the serving dishes, extra cutlery, and linens were beautifully displayed and easily accessible from a stately sideboard. Beyond their primary use for dining, these pieces often featured ample storage for cherished possessions, making them incredibly practical. Today, their versatility is a huge selling point. A vintage sideboard can be a stunning console table in an entryway, a stylish media cabinet, or even a unique dresser in a bedroom. Their sturdy construction and timeless design mean they adapt beautifully to modern living spaces. So, when faced with a piece that seems 'lost' – like my sideboard with its stripped top – how do you decide 'what to do next'? My personal approach involves a careful assessment. First, evaluate the structural integrity: Is it wobbly? Are there major breaks? Next, consider the finish. While my piece had a damaged top, the rest of the original patina was miraculously intact. Preserving that original finish, even if imperfect, often tells a piece's story far better than a complete strip and re-stain. It's about respecting its journey. For pieces like this, a targeted restoration, focusing only on the damaged area while protecting the rest, is often the best path. This delicate balance of repair and preservation is what truly brings these antique treasures back to life, allowing them to continue their story for another century. For anyone considering a furniture revival project, I always recommend starting small. Learn about the wood, the original finish type, and appropriate techniques. Sometimes, a thorough cleaning and a good waxing are all a piece needs. Other times, like with my sideboard, it requires more specialized care. Don't be afraid to seek professional advice or learn from experienced restorers. The satisfaction of transforming a piece that seemed beyond repair, and giving it a 'grand comeback,' is incredibly rewarding. It’s more than just furniture; it’s about preserving art, history, and craftsmanship.

Saving money the traditional way doesn't work anymore. You can't save to become rich or even to buy essential items. After a few weeks, you end up dipping into your savings to cover necessary expenses. Additionally, the value of money decreases over time, so $500 today may only be worth $49
