Jan Book Club Coord: Heartless By Marissa Meyer
#Lemon8Scrapbook Bestie suggested we start the year with the Queen of Hearts origin story, and I have to say I came to like it:) In the beginning it was a little hard to get into, but it quickly became a very complex story with references I didn’t even know were from the original Alice story. Bestie is a true AIW aficionado, so I enjoyed getting to understand why she liked this book so much. It does have a tragic ending, but I gave this book at 3.8 out of 5:)

In 'Heartless', Marissa Meyer intricately weaves an origin story for the Queen of Hearts, showcasing the character's development and highlighting the elements that tie back to Lewis Carroll’s classic tale. Readers will appreciate the author’s skillful depth in portraying themes of love, ambition, and heartbreak. As the protagonist navigates her desires and the expectations placed upon her, the story unfolds with surprising twists that shed light on the motivations behind one of literature’s most infamous villains. Meyer's writing immerses readers in a whimsical yet tragic world, making it essential for fans of fantasy and retellings. The book has garnered varied reviews, with many praising its imaginative take on a well-known character while others note its slower pacing in the beginning. Overall, the 3.8 out of 5 rating speaks to its engaging narrative, even with its darker themes. As you pick up 'Heartless', be prepared to expand your understanding of the Alice in Wonderland universe and enjoy a tale that is much more than a simple retelling.

Super cute! Love the idea of dressing in the theme of the book you're reading ❤️
