I found this book scrolling through Booktok and reading overviews on the Barnes & Noble app. I went and bought it, happy to find out that it was also affordable (hello less than $15!). When I began reading it, I couldn’t put it down! It hooked me instantly and I read the first half rather quickly. I liked how the main character was navigating grieving the loss of her sibling (relatable) and how the author described her experience with the grieving process. The author does a great job painting a picture of her family’s property and goes into detail about each character and how they are all intertwined. The love story between the two main characters is full of chemistry, wholesomeness, and is a beautiful story of young love at a time in life when things are new and exciting - right before going to college/starting their adult journey. I am super excited to read the rest of K. L. Walther’s books! 📚

Walther, the brilliant mind behind such captivating stories. When you find an author whose words just speak to you, whose narratives feel so real and personal, you naturally want to know more about them – who they are, what inspires them, almost like you're searching for a 'portrait' of their creative soul. K. L. Walther has a magical way of crafting contemporary young adult fiction that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable. Her books, especially 'The Summer of Broken Rules,' consistently dive into the complexities of young adulthood, exploring themes of first love, the significance of family bonds, navigating grief, and the exciting yet daunting path of self-discovery. She approaches these subjects with such grace and authenticity. For instance, in 'The Summer of Broken Rules,' the main character's journey through grieving the loss of a sibling felt incredibly raw and real, a storyline that many can relate to on a profound level. Walther doesn't shy away from the tough emotions, but she always weaves in hope, warmth, and that heartwarming, butterflies-in-your-stomach kind of romance. This blend makes her work incredibly resonant, pulling you right into the characters' lives and making you feel every laugh and every tear alongside them.
What I find most captivating about her writing, and what I believe draws so many people to her unique voice, is her exceptional ability to create vivid, immersive settings. In 'The Summer of Broken Rules,' the descriptions of Martha's Vineyard weren't just background; they were a vibrant character in themselves, painting a perfect, sun-drenched picture of a summer filled with change, new friendships, and exhilarating new beginnings. This skill in scene-setting, combined with her knack for developing genuine, multifaceted characters that feel like people you already know, makes her narratives truly unforgettable. The chemistry between the two main characters is palpable and wholesome, reminding you of that exciting rush of first love right before college or starting a new adult journey. It’s a period of life brimming with new experiences, and Walther captures that beautifully.
Her publisher, Sourcebooks, has clearly found a gem in K. L. Walther, and it's no surprise that her books consistently receive high praise from readers and critics alike, often boasting impressive ratings around 4.3 out of 5, just like the story I recently devoured! It’s a powerful testament to her consistent quality, engaging storytelling, and deep understanding of her target audience. If you enjoyed the heartfelt journey, the relatable characters, and the evocative setting of 'The Summer of Broken Rules,' you'll undoubtedly find yourself equally charmed and captivated by her other releases. She’s definitely an author whose true 'portrait' is best understood not through a single image, but through the rich, emotional worlds she builds and the profound feelings she evokes in her readers. I know I'm already eager to pick up her next book and get lost in another one of her beautifully crafted stories!
