Are you for or against highlighting your books ? 📕

#stationery #lemon8challenge

I find sometimes I see something in a book and I absolutely fall in love with it and so I highlight it so that I you know take note to memory and for every different book I read I have a different color that I highlight with. What are your thoughts on this?

... Read moreSo, the big question often pops up: DO YOU HIGHLIGHT IN YOUR BOOKS OR NO? It feels like such a divisive topic among readers! For years, I wrestled with the idea, wondering if I was 'ruining' a book by marking it up. But honestly, for me, it's become an essential part of my reading process and I think it's perfectly okay to highlight books if it serves your learning. Let's talk about why I started saying 'yes' to highlighting. For me, it's about active reading. When I highlight, I'm not just passively consuming words; I'm engaging with them. It helps me remember key ideas, especially in non-fiction or textbooks. I find that going back through my highlighted sections is a quick way to revisit important concepts, making revision or recall much easier. It's like having a personalized summary of the most impactful parts of the book, tailored exactly to what resonated with me. Plus, when I stumble upon a beautiful phrase or a profound quote in a novel, marking it makes it feel even more special, allowing me to easily find it again later for reflection or sharing. This definitely feels like a 'good to highlight books' scenario for me. Of course, there's the other side: 'is it bad to highlight books?' Many purists feel that marking a book diminishes its value or beauty, and I completely understand that perspective. For certain collectible or beloved first editions, I definitely shy away from highlighting. Also, sometimes I used to go overboard, marking almost every other sentence, which actually made it harder to discern what was truly important. My solution? Be selective. I also consider the purpose of the book. If it's a library book or one I plan to resell, I'll use sticky notes instead of a pen or highlighter. This way, I get the benefit of active reading without permanent marks, avoiding the 'highlighting book with pen' dilemma on precious copies. So, what to highlight in a book? This is where it gets interesting! For non-fiction or academic texts, I focus on: Key definitions or terms. Main arguments or thesis statements. Supporting evidence or crucial examples. Summaries at the end of chapters. Actionable advice or steps. When I'm reading novels or other works of fiction, my approach is different. I'm looking for: Beautiful prose or memorable sentences. Profound quotes that make me pause and think. Crucial plot points or character revelations (especially on a reread). Passages that evoke strong emotions. As the original article mentions, I also love using different colors for different themes or types of information. For example, yellow for definitions, pink for quotes, blue for actionable steps. This system really helps organize my thoughts and makes reviewing a breeze! It's all part of my personal book highlighting strategy. Ultimately, whether you highlight your books or not is a personal choice. There's no single right or wrong answer. But if you've been wondering 'should you highlight your books?', I encourage you to experiment. Find a system that works for you, enhancing your reading experience and helping you connect more deeply with the text. What's your take? Do you grab a highlighter, or do you keep your pages pristine?
