DIY Halloween puff quilt so far ✨

Recently got a sewing machine & just so happened to come across a tutorial on how to make a puff quilt on tik tok 🤯 another hobby that’ll break my wallet but I’m determined to do (I can never start w simple projects they always have to be giant & if I can’t get them the first try I get frustrated & wanna quit 🤭) so hopefully I’ll finish this one before Halloween if I have the energy to keep going😬

I’m hoping I won’t mess this up since this is the first time I’ve EVER used a sewing machine (one of the rows is shorter than the other ones but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there)

I bought 10 different 1/2 yard patterns & 4 yards of plain white fabric (you could honestly just use a flat sheet & itll prob be cheaper) I definitely wish I would’ve got more fabric just so I could have more variety but it’s my first quilt so I tried to dial it back

each patterned fabric is 6 inches while the white is 5.5 inches & it’s pleated on every side to create the pocket for the stuffing to go into once it’s all assembled 🤩

I’ll update everyday I work on it just so I can keep myself accountable & have more motivation to finish it. If this comes out like I hope it does then everyone’s getting a puff quilt for Christmas 🙏🏽

... Read moreIt's so exciting to hear about your DIY Halloween puff quilt journey! Starting with a big project like this, especially as a first-timer on a sewing machine, is incredibly brave and inspiring. I totally get the 'go big or go home' mentality – sometimes the most challenging projects are the most rewarding. For anyone else thinking about diving into the world of 'puffy quilts' or 'bubble quilts' like this one, let me share a few insights from my own experiences. The puff quilt, with its delightful textured surface (think of those adorable pumpkins, ghosts, bats, and skeletons popping out!), is a fantastic choice for a cozy, unique blanket. It's different from a traditional 'rag quilt' where fabric edges are snipped to create fringe. Puff quilts get their volume from individual fabric squares that are sewn into little pockets and then stuffed. Choosing Your Fabrics (and Making it "Easy") Just like you, I found that fabric choice can make or break the project. For a Halloween theme, those patterned fabrics with spooky motifs are perfect! When you're picking, consider how the colors will work together – a vibrant orange background, as seen in your project, really makes those patterns pop. If you're aiming for an 'easy rag quilt' or an 'easy puff quilt,' here are a few hacks: Pre-cut Fabric Bundles: Save time on cutting by looking for charm packs or pre-cut squares. While you're making pockets, uniform sizes are key. Simple Backing: Using a flat sheet, as you mentioned, is a brilliant and cost-effective idea for the backing fabric. No need for intricate piecing there! Stuffing Strategy: Don't overstuff! Just enough poly-fil in each pocket gives that lovely 'quilt puffy' effect without making it too difficult to sew the final rows. I often find a small handful is perfect for each 6-inch square. Sewing Machine Basics & Troubleshooting Since this is your first time with a sewing machine, here are some beginner-friendly tips that helped me avoid frustrations: Practice Stitches: Before tackling your quilt, practice sewing straight lines and corners on scrap fabric. This builds confidence! Thread Tension: If your stitches look loopy or uneven, check your machine's thread tension. It's a common culprit for beginners. Needle Choice: A fresh, sharp needle designed for general sewing will make a huge difference, especially when going through multiple layers of fabric. Take Breaks: When you feel frustrated (like when one row is shorter, we've all been there!), step away for a bit. A fresh perspective works wonders. Why Not a Rag Quilt? You might wonder why you chose a puff quilt over a 'rag quilt template' or an 'easy rag quilt.' While rag quilts are also cozy and have a distinct look, puff quilts offer a different kind of plushness and warmth due to the stuffing. They also allow for those clear, unfrayed patterned fabric squares to really shine, showcasing your chosen Halloween designs. You could even explore 'faux quilting with styrofoam' for decorative pieces, but for a truly snuggly blanket, sewing and stuffing really deliver. Keep sharing your progress! Seeing those first few rows with pumpkins, ghosts, bats, and skeletons come together is so encouraging. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of creating something beautiful and functional with your own hands, especially when it’s a big, cozy Halloween puff quilt!
