... Read moreHey everyone! So, you've probably heard the term "lash tech" or "lash artist" thrown around, but have you ever truly stopped to think about what goes into it? Beyond just applying extensions, being a lash tech is a whole world unto itself, a blend of artistry, dedication, and often, unexpected therapy sessions. I wanted to share a deeper dive into what this career really means, beyond the perfect Instagram photos.
First off, let's clear something up: LASHING IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. It’s not just a job; it’s a craft that demands incredible patience, precision, and a steady hand. It's truly a skill, and it takes time to master it. I remember those early days, shaking hands and squinting for hours. It’s a continuous learning curve, always staying updated with new techniques and products to give you the best, most beautiful results.
But beyond the technical skill, there’s the physical toll. You know how we always joke about needing to do "Glute exercises" because we're sitting for so long? Well, it's not entirely a joke! Our hands and back hurts 24/7. We’re hunched over, focusing intently for hours on end, day after day. It's physically demanding work, and staying healthy is crucial. We’re often running on strong coffee and sometimes, yes, those "hungry tummies" because we barely get a break between clients.
Then there's the human element. Oh, the stories we hear! We hear it ALL, and I mean ALL. From relationship woes to career triumphs, clients often open up during their appointments. That’s why I often say that 95% is actual THERAPY. We become a confidante, a listening ear, and sometimes, a silent witness to your deepest thoughts. It's a unique bond, and yes, 9/10 you become friends with your clients. Building those connections is one of the most rewarding parts of the job, far beyond just making someone "feel pretty."
Of course, with such close relationships, there’s also the occasional heartbreak. We do get "butt hurt if you go to someone else." It’s natural, we pour our heart and soul into our work and our clients, so when someone moves on, it can sting a little. But we understand, life happens!
And let's not forget the sensory experiences. We can smell everything, every inch of the room and our clients. Sometimes it's lovely, sometimes... well, let's just say we develop a very keen sense of smell! And yes, we are used to "SNORING" – it's a common, almost comforting background noise in our lashing world. It means our clients are relaxed, which is always a good sign!
It’s true, it can be good pay, but it’s earned through intense focus, physical strain, emotional support, and constant self-improvement. Being a lash tech isn't just about beautiful lashes; it's about creating a safe space, mastering a demanding art, and truly connecting with people. It’s challenging, rewarding, and never, ever boring. So next time you're in for your refill, remember all the unseen effort your lash artist puts in to make you feel your best!
