3.5/5 - really draggy ending

How To Sell A Haunted House by Grady Hendrix | 3.5/5

When Louise’s parents pass away, she’s forced to return to her childhood home in Charleston—a place overflowing with her father’s academic clutter and her mother’s unsettling collection of puppets and dolls. Beyond the grief, she has to navigate a fractured relationship with her brother, Mark, to get the house ready for the market. But the siblings soon realize that the house isn't just full of memories; it’s holding onto something much more malevolent that has no intention of leaving.

My thoughts šŸ’:

I have mixed feelings about this one! On one hand, the family drama and the "creepy doll" factor were top-tier. On the other hand, the narrative got a bit messy as it approached the climax. I found myself checking the page count because it felt so draggy at the end. I’m glad I read it because the concepts were so unique, but the pacing issues kept it from being a 4 or 5-star read for me.

... Read moreHaving finished "How To Sell A Haunted House," I found myself reflecting deeply on the blend of emotional grief and supernatural horror in the story. The presence of unsettling puppets and dolls added a chilling layer that stayed with me long after reading. What made the experience more engaging was the realistic portrayal of the fractured sibling relationship, enriching the narrative beyond typical haunted house clichĆ©s. What stood out most was how the house itself seemed like a character, holding onto malevolent forces tied to the family’s past. This concept felt fresh in the horror genre, reminding me how physical spaces can embody unresolved trauma. That said, I also noticed the story's pacing slowed significantly near the end. As someone who enjoys thrillers, I usually expect the climax to ramp up tension, but here it felt prolonged, which affected my overall satisfaction. This draggy ending might challenge readers who prefer fast-paced horror. If you love horror stories that mix psychological depth with supernatural elements, this book might still captivate you despite its flaws. The detailed descriptions of Charleston's atmosphere and the richly drawn family dynamics add substantial value. In summary, "How To Sell A Haunted House" offers a unique narrative experience with top-tier creepy elements and emotional complexity. While the slow ending might disappoint some, the book's originality and eerie mood make it a worthwhile read for fans of haunted house thrillers and horror novels.
