Black Wall Street, officially known as the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was one of the most prominent African American communities in the early 20th century. Established in the early 1900s, it flourished as a hub of Black entrepreneurship, culture, and community life, boasting thriving businesses such as banks, hotels, theaters, and grocery stores that served the local and regional population. The prosperity of Black Wall Street represented a powerful statement of self-sufficiency and economic independence during an era marked by segregation and widespread racial discrimination. Despite limited access to mainstream financial institutions and systemic racism, Black Wall Street became a beacon of Black economic empowerment. Tragically, the district faced a devastating blow during the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. Over two days of violence, white mobs attacked the community, resulting in widespread destruction of property, loss of lives, and displacement of residents. This event erased much of the economic progress and left a lasting scar on the community. In recent decades, efforts to preserve the history and honor the legacy of Black Wall Street have gained momentum. Museums, memorials, and educational programs now work to raise awareness of its significance, ensuring the story is not forgotten. The legacy of Black Wall Street continues to inspire contemporary movements advocating for racial equity, economic justice, and the revitalization of historically Black neighborhoods.
