So many of you asked about the process behind my monochrome bat oil painting, and I'm so excited to share more! For this art class project, I started by gathering my absolute favorite bat plushies. I have quite a collection, from a fluffy, large round bat to a cute winged one, and even a unique bat-eared teddy bear. They were my perfect models! I even have a tiny small bat plushie that made it into the foreground, adding an extra layer of cuteness. Choosing the monochrome palette was a fun challenge. I decided on shades of pink and grey because I felt they really captured the cozy yet mysterious vibe of bats, especially with the soft pink background I chose. Mixing the oil paints to get just the right variations in value was key to making each plushie stand out on the canvas. It's amazing how much depth you can create with limited colors! I spent a lot of time observing how the light hit their different textures, trying to translate that softness and fuzziness onto my painting. Capturing the subtle differences between a smooth plush and a fluffy one was a really rewarding part of the process. One of the images I took for reference actually had my plushies arranged under a soft red light, which gave me some great ideas for how shadows and highlights would play out in my chosen pink and grey palette. This reference photo helped me visualize how the light would interact with the different forms of my subjects. Painting the different forms – the distinct roundness of my large bat, the delicate structure of the winged bat's fabric wings, and the cozy, slightly rumpled texture of the bat-eared teddy bear – really pushed my skills. I remember carefully layering the paint to build up the volume and make them look almost three-dimensional on the flat canvas. Setting up the final piece on the easel in class, I felt a huge sense of accomplishment. It's more than just a painting; it's a piece that truly reflects my personal journey and my deep love for these adorable creatures. The way the pinks and greys blend and contrast creates such a serene yet captivating feeling. It really shows how much I've grown in my oil painting journey. If you're thinking of trying a monochrome project, I highly recommend picking a subject you adore – it makes the whole process so much more enjoyable and rewarding! Don't be afraid to experiment with your color choices and really pay attention to the details in your reference. Every little shadow and highlight contributes to the overall magic. It was such a fulfilling experience to transform my beloved plushies into a work of art on canvas!

Love it!
