Jackal by Erin E. Adam’s has literally raised the endgame by on my page because everyone STANS. i’m 35 pages in and I believe the hype.
What I love:
the subtle discussions of race through micro-aggression, Black hair care and external validation make this book relatable while also leaving room to reflect on personal experience. as a Black girl that grew up in the suburbs that also felt out of place, this hit some key triggers I haven’t thought of in years.
The way that generations of Black women from all different years, life experience, age and background feel these fleeting but ever present anxiety to be seen as “one of the good ones”. While also portraying themselves as “unbothered” by the blanket of ignorance is too relatable.
The subtle hints to magical realism lurking in the dark spaces and also the true meaning of passive aggression in conversation makes this read worthwhile. Not to mention, the literal hair-standing imagery intricately laced with poetic prose.
What I can do without:
There have been a couple spots that feel a little wordy. This is often an ick for me with horror is the ability to get lost in an description. My ADHD can make my eyes glaze over if there isn’t an action after a certain word count BUT it rectified itself once the story got going. #currentlyreading #lemon8challenge
