A book that had new sobbing at 3am

YA MYSTERY-LITERARY FICTION with Black protagonists

there were so many things i’d like the say about this book. the way that it jumped in and out of time, built strong characterization and showed how Blackness isn’t a monolith even when they’re separated by a neighborhood.

for me, I loved the way that it made me reflect on middle school and the transition to high school. the way that social cues and hierarchy deepened to be more aware of not only social standing but family dynamics now playing into that.

✨ HONEST REVIEW ✨

i’d honestly re-read this book. there were so many examples of the way society views young Black women from different socioeconomic backgrounds. their friendship is an amazing example of bridging gaps between these lines and caring more deeply than the surface.
