In my personal experience engaging with the discourse on womanhood, I've found that the tension between objective definitions and subjective experiences is central to meaningful dialogue. Womanhood can’t be pinned down by a single definition because it spans biological, social, and individual identity aspects. For example, topics like menstruation or pregnancy are often seen as biological markers of womanhood but can exclude many trans women who identify strongly with womanhood through lived experience and gender expression. Socialization also plays a huge role. Growing up, societal expectations about roles, beauty, and behavior shape how one experiences and expresses femininity. These varied experiences among many women lead to different interpretations of what it means to be a woman. I’ve noticed that discussions become unproductive when participants insist on an ‘objective’ truth without acknowledging this complexity. Safety concerns and experiences with sexism also influence personal perspectives, especially for marginalized groups such as trans women. When conversations recognize the diversity of experiences and avoid gatekeeping, they tend to foster greater understanding and solidarity. Ultimately, acknowledging both objective factors and subjective narratives around womanhood enriches the conversation and makes it more inclusive. Embracing a nuanced approach allows us to better support one another and appreciate the multifaceted nature of gender identity.
