From my personal experience and conversations with others in the autism community, the way people casually use terms like "a touch of the tism" can feel dismissive and frustrating. It overlooks the significant needs that come with high support autism. It's important to understand that autism is a spectrum, and individuals who require high support often depend heavily on caregivers and supportive environments to manage daily challenges. Saying someone has "a touch of autism" diminishes these realities and can contribute to misunderstanding and stigma. During Autism Awareness Month, raising awareness should include educating others on the variety and depth of experiences within the autism spectrum. The hashtag #highsupportautism is vital for drawing attention to those who need more help and empathy. Additionally, popular culture references like #homelander sometimes frame characters with complex psychological profiles that can resemble autistic traits, but it's crucial to distinguish fictional portrayals from real experiences. Authentic voices from the autism community are essential to provide accurate representation and support. For those supporting individuals with high support autism, patience, respect, and education are key. Encouraging others to move beyond surface-level understanding leads to a more inclusive and compassionate society where everyone’s needs are acknowledged and valued.
