Silicone mold sort/organize part 2

As a fellow crafter, I know the struggle is real when it comes to keeping our supplies organized, especially those ever-growing collections of silicone molds! I recently dove deep into sorting and organizing mine, and I wanted to share my personal approach to how I store silicone molds to keep them in tip-top shape and easy to find. It’s been a game-changer for my crafting space! First off, why is proper mold storage so important? Well, for me, it's about preserving the life of my molds, saving precious space, and most importantly, not wasting time searching for that one specific mold when inspiration strikes. Silicone molds, while durable, can warp, collect dust, or get damaged if not stored correctly. Protecting them is key to ensuring your resin art or other crafts turn out perfectly every time. My journey started by making progress and getting everything sorted into rough categories, just like you might be doing. I found it easiest to begin by grouping them generally: all jewelry molds together, all coaster molds, keychains, larger casting molds, and so on. Within these rough categories, I then refined them further by shape or size. For instance, all my tiny earrings molds went into one subgroup, while larger pendant molds went into another. This initial sorting phase, although it took some time, was crucial for understanding what I had and how much space each category would need. Once everything was sorted, I moved on to actual storage methods. Here are my favorite ways to store silicone molds that have worked wonders for me: Flat Storage in Binders: For smaller, flatter molds like jewelry pieces, tiny charms, or thin embellishments, I absolutely love using binders with clear photo album pages or document sleeves. This method keeps them flat, preventing warping, and allows me to flip through them easily to see everything at a glance. It's super space-efficient and protects them from dust. Vertical Storage in Magazine Holders or File Boxes: For my slightly thicker or 3D molds (think bigger coaster molds, small bowls, or geometric shapes), I found that storing them vertically in clear magazine holders or small file boxes prevents them from getting squashed. I can label the front of the holder by category, making it simple to grab exactly what I need. Drawer Dividers and Small Bins: For medium-sized molds that don't fit perfectly in binders or vertical holders, I utilize drawers with acrylic dividers or small plastic bins. This keeps similar molds together and prevents them from becoming a jumbled mess. Clear bins are my preference so I can still see what’s inside without pulling everything out. Pegboards for Frequently Used Molds: If you have wall space, a pegboard can be a fantastic solution for frequently used or larger, uniquely shaped molds. I use S-hooks to hang them up, which keeps them accessible, perfectly displayed, and prevents any potential warping from being stacked. Airtight Containers for Dust Protection: For my more delicate or food-grade molds (though I mostly use mine for resin), I sometimes opt for airtight plastic containers. This offers an extra layer of protection against dust, pet hair, and other studio debris. Just make sure the molds aren't squished inside. Beyond the specific methods, a few general principles have made a huge difference: always clean your molds thoroughly after use and ensure they're completely dry before storing them. This prevents residue buildup and prolongs their life. Also, try to avoid stacking heavy items on top of your molds, especially softer ones, as this can lead to permanent deformation. Lastly, keep your stored molds away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, which can degrade the silicone over time. Labeling everything, even just with a sticky note, will save you so much time in the long run! Implementing these storage strategies has truly transformed my crafting area.
