This abandoned airport has a rich history dating back to 1954 when a local manufacturer constructed a small airstrip and hangar for private use to support company traffic. Over time, due to infrastructure changes such as the expansion of the U.S. highway system, the airstrip had to be relocated and rebuilt magnificently, featuring a 4,506-foot main runway, passenger terminal with a 1,200-seat auditorium, control tower, a separate hangar, and even hydro-electric power generation. In 1960, North Central Airlines began scheduled passenger service to this field, facilitating travel for the industry’s customers and contributing to the airport's functionality. However, service ended in 1966, prompting attempts to maintain operations by other means. The airport later hosted routes connecting Chicago, Cadillac, Ludington, and Detroit City Airport, but declining use led to its eventual operational halt by the early 1970s. Efforts to sell the airport to the city were unsuccessful, but the property found new life in 1979 when purchased by Nartron Corporation’s owner. Nartron repurposed the facility for electronics engineering and manufacturing, reflecting the shift from aviation to industrial uses.
