Albums that altered my brain chemistry

Disintegration - The Cure

The cure is the start of alternative/pop punk/punk/gothic and all subgenres of the alt community. Regardless of what you think of them you cannot deny they paved the way to a new world of alternative. The synthy - post rock dark era accompanied by some of the deepest poetry they’ve ever written, added to the alternative style that this album inspired has led many of our favorite gothic and alternative bands today to be inspired and create some awesome tracks. Everything to love ballads and dark eras this album has me in a chokehold time after time.

Methodrone - The Brian’s Jonestown Massacre

This indie band took the late 90s early 2000s on a journey. However methodrone - opened a door to a different type of sound. That subgenre is called Shoegaze. And the eerie slowness And the sound exploration opened my ears to a whole subgenre i have grown to love. And pathed a path to many other bands of the subgenre. Ranked 33 on pitchforks list of the best shogaze albums of all time in 2018

Misfits - The Cure

Misfits is the seventeenth studio album by the English rock band the Kinks. Psychedelic rock by nature - but Davies nature was certainly a staple of punk rock. As well as paving the path to experimental rock. This album is a classic outsider album, managing to convey deep emotions while rocking hard. These are the underdogs of rock and roll and are often not recognized for the pure raw talent in mainstream. This album was a steer in a different direction from their brand, but a more than honorable mention in the terms of punk and progressive underground rock and roll.

Peripheral Vision - Turnover

This album takes you on a journey. Each song telling a story and igniting an emotion that you can relate to. Pushing the boundaries of pop punk, and opening the doors to Indie Shoegaze turnover created so much depth with each song. This album in my personal opinion, takes them out of the box from pop punk bands, such as Title Fight and Brand New with whom other albums, they sound very similar to…and into the raw depth of pure emotions and progressive sound. Front to back i can cruise to this album and feel nostalgic and understood.

Small Steps, Heavy Hooves - Dear And The Headlights

An emo staple of my lifeeee! The Phoenix based band combines the artistic development and influence of bands like Dashboard Confessional, Radiohead, Arcade Fire and Bob Dylan. The album displays their knack for writing excellent melodic and emotional rock songs. This album is about an explorers new relationship. And though the topic can be seen as juvenile. The upbeat sound and the subject is attacked with incredible maturity, sophistication, and poetic flow. Poetically standing out and making a name for themselves in the early twee pop punk stages of the 2000s. One of my favorite vinyls when I’m feeling nostalgic and want to explore the impending doom of a dismantled relationship.

Is This It? - The Strokes

The influences are so heavily rooted in post punk that this album really takes a special place in my heart during a time where it was hard to distinguish a difference in sound amongst other bands. The Stooges, The Velvet Underground are bands equally before their time and additionally an obvious inspiration to The Strokes as a whole. this album in particular. The opening credits give an openly lofi feel, furthering into progressive post punk and vocals resembling old Lou Reed. Julian Casablancas is a gifted frontman and his voice will compel you to continue on this albums journey. Twists and turns of symbolism and primal energy, Julian’s voice can captivate you in confidence and uplift you. All whilst exploring the depth of relationships and issues. Even the saddest songs can soothe you and leave you feeling uplifted on this journey. By far the best strokes album before the hype and the mainstream and record company trash they were forced to produce.

In Rainbows - Radiohead

By far my favorite Radiohead album. One word. Transcendental. This album is a beautiful work of art. It teleports you to another realm. 16 years old to date and it is a record i consider absolutely timeless. Experimental and full of surprises - this album is a staple in showing the growth and progression of the bands timeline as a whole. First time that i heard this album after Ok Computer my hopes were not high. But every part of my mind, body, and soul felt this album awaken parts of me i didn’t know existed. To this day tracks on this album make me feel so comfortable in accepting the unknown. And it’s one album i wish i could hear for the first time all over again - as well as continue to enjoy because its sound is timeless.

Tell All Your Friends - Taking Back Sunday

Last and certainly not least. A staple in emo rock/alternative rock/progressive rock. This album in the height of emo rock is a landmark. And a beautiful tale of love, friendship, hardship, jealousy, and depression. Frontman Adam Lazzara is poetic to a fault. Ghost man on the third helped me understand and conquer the dark feelings of self loathing and ideation and single handily made my teenage years feel so understood. The album is also attached to some drama and tea with lead singer of Brand New - Jesse Lacey. Admits a dispute between frontman 2001’s cruelly catchy DUI fantasy, “Seventy Times 7” was released first. In turn…The Amityville band turned Lacey’s words against him in the math-y anthem “There’s No ‘I’ in Team” triumphing and surpassing the band in many ways. Ultimately adam was right since Jesse ended up being an abuser of fans and women 👏🏼 but during the time the both whiny fronting bands made for some serious 2000s tea and it was piping hot. Overall this is one of my favorite bands. And one of my favorite albums. It’s written in a masochist perspective with such a poetic deep dive of wit, math riffs and fluid lyricism.
