nicu day 89!

Dear Lemon8 Diary:

It's been 89 days in the #nicu and baby girl is growing like a lil weed. I am exhausted but am somewhat seeing the end of this long journey. At this point we are off all supplemental supports except her feeding tube. I pray that she can come home soon 💜

... Read moreIt's hard to put into words the feeling when you first see your tiny preemie in the NICU. Even if they aren't exactly '1 pound' in your hand, the fragility is immense, and you quickly learn just how delicate and yet incredibly strong these little fighters are. The first time I saw my baby girl, she was so small, it felt like she could fit in the palm of my hand. Every day has been a testament to her resilience, growing from such a tiny beginning into the strong little 'weed' she is today. This journey of watching her grow, gain weight, and slowly shed the layers of medical support has been both heartbreaking and awe-inspiring. One of the most overwhelming aspects of the NICU, especially in those early days, is the sheer amount of 'baby nicu equipment' surrounding your precious little one. When I first walked into her room, it felt like a maze of wires, tubes, and machines. There's the incubator, which becomes their first home, providing that vital warmth and protection. Then come the monitors – the heart rate monitor, oxygen saturation monitor – each with its own rhythm of beeps and alarms that quickly become the soundtrack to your life. You learn to interpret every sound, every little fluctuation, and celebrate when those numbers stay steady. It's a steep learning curve, understanding what each wire and tube does, but the nurses are angels who patiently explain everything. For us, the 'feeding tube' has been a constant companion in her hospital crib. It's an essential part of her growth, ensuring she gets all the nutrients she needs, even when she's too tired or too tiny to take full feeds orally. Seeing that tiny tube on her face, alongside the monitoring wires, was tough at first. You dream of holding your baby close and feeding them normally, but the feeding tube is a lifeline. There's so much hope tied to it – the hope that one day, she'll be strong enough to eat completely by mouth and we can say goodbye to it for good. It's a huge milestone we're eagerly anticipating, especially now that we're 89 days in and she's made so much progress. Getting off 'supplemental supports' is a huge deal. Each wire removed, each monitor disconnected, is a victory. It’s a slow dance, a gradual weaning off these essential machines, proving that your baby is getting stronger and more independent. My heart aches for the day we can finally disconnect from all of it and bring her home. If you're a #preemiebaby parent going through this, know that every day is a step forward, no matter how small. Focus on those tiny victories, lean on your community, and remember the incredible strength both you and your little one possess. It's an exhausting marathon, but the finish line, when you finally get to bring your baby home, makes every single day worth it.
