Choosing to focus on what you truly want out of life, especially when it contrasts sharply with traditional or familial expectations, can be both liberating and challenging. As someone who resonates with being the first in my family to prioritize my own dreams over imposed paths, I understand the mix of guilt, empowerment, and uncertainty that comes with it. In many cultures shaped by colonial histories, including Mexican American communities, collective expectations often emphasize duty, conformity, and respect for longstanding traditions. However, embracing individuality and self-determination doesn't mean abandoning heritage—it means redefining it on your own terms. I've found that connecting with others who share similar feelings, whether through forums, support groups, or social media hashtags like #IMFREEEEE and #fuckcolonialism, creates a sense of solidarity. It reaffirms that seeking personal fulfillment is not selfish but an important step toward healing from the controlling forces of colonialism and societal pressures. Living authentically requires acknowledging the complex emotions involved—sometimes anger at restrictive norms, sometimes sadness over disconnect, and ultimately hope for growth. This journey also involves setting boundaries and learning to say no to expectations that don't align with your values. By continuing to share personal stories and engaging in open conversations, we can foster communities that celebrate freedom, resilience, and diversity of choice. This approach helps dismantle the lingering impacts of colonial mindsets while honoring the unique paths each individual chooses.
