Let’s Chat: Gender Disappointment 🫣
The thing no one wants to discuss.
Over the years as a mom of 5 boys for over a decade this is something people made me feel awful for and it’s so annoying. Let’s chat this for a hot second because it’s a topic so MANY moms are judged for and no one talks about. Gender disappointment DOES NOT mean you’re ungrateful for your child’s life, and I can’t stand when people PUT that on women and twist it. We have had 6 boys in a row, 5 on earth, one in heaven. Boys run strong in our family clearly. I had someone after boy #4 tell me I was ungrateful for my son because I was sad I didn’t have a daughter for a split second when I found out his gender.
First off how rude to push that onto a mom and second just stop the judgement. The second every woman sees the plus sign appear you begin to envision a daughter and a son, and all the things you’ll do with each; so when the gender is announced yes you will have a tiny gut punch that it’s one gender over the other. It’s normal. It doesn’t mean you're pissed or don’t want the child, that’s just insane.
My husband said it best; it’s like you’re at a restaurant and they have chicken and steak, you like both, but you order chicken, only for the waiter to come tell you they are out of chicken and you’ll have to eat steak? Do you flip the table and freak out? No you eat a big juicy steak just as happily as you would have eaten your chicken.
After years of wondering what life would be like with a daughter, we finally found out. After 5 boys and 3 pregnancy losses, we now have a daughter and it's the coolest experience because girls are so different. They have this innate caring and love about them towards their toys and others, it's been such a cool experience to get to raise a daughter alongside these 5 boys.
So mamas, don’t let someone make you feel like crap for envisioning and dreaming of what life would be like with each gender, it’s normal. What’s not normal is shaming a mom for anything, we all have our own unique journey, and motherhood is hard enough as it is.
