Somewhere along the way, “date night” became synonymous with picking a restaurant, dressing up a little, and sitting across from each other making small talk over appetizers. And while that can be sweet in its own way, I’ve learned that the best date nights aren’t about the food at all — they’re about the connection. Real, intentional, present connection.
Date nights should be about sharing the things that make you you. The hobbies you love, the interests that light you up, the experiences you want to invite someone into. Sometimes that looks like cheering side by side at a basketball or football game, wrapped up in the energy of the crowd and the thrill of the moment. Other times it’s something as simple as saying, “I want to show you this part of my world,” and letting them step into it with you.
And it doesn’t always have to be mutual. Some of the most meaningful moments come from taking turns — one night doing something you love, the next night doing something they love. That kind of effort says, “I care about what matters to you,” and that’s where relationships deepen. It’s letting each other be seen in new ways, appreciated for your differences, and connected through shared curiosity.
But the biggest piece of all? Putting the phones away. Not just flipping them over on the table, but really putting them away. Giving each other your full attention and allowing the moment to be something you remember later — not something you scroll past.
