... Read moreHey DTI fam! You loved the quick peek at my DTI inspo, so I decided to dive deeper and share even more tips and tricks for those tricky themes. It's all about creativity and knowing what items to pull from your wardrobe!
Let's break down some of my favorite recent themes and how I approached them, or what I've seen work really well for others.
A Day in Paris DTI:
For this theme, I always picture chic, effortless elegance. Think classic French cinema or a stroll down the Champs-Élysées. The character in my post rocked a black beret, sunglasses, a red top, black skirt, and knee-high boots – a solid, iconic look! To elevate it, consider adding a striped top (marinière!), a delicate scarf, or even a small handbag. Colors like black, white, red, and navy are your best friends here. Don't forget subtle makeup and perhaps a little croissant accessory if you have one! It's all about sophisticated simplicity.
Cybergoth DTI:
This one is super fun because it's so distinct! My outfit for this theme was a black cyber-goth ensemble with goggles and a green phone. When I think of cybergoth, I'm looking for futuristic elements mixed with gothic aesthetics. Think neon accents, reflective materials, chunky platform boots, and industrial details. Hair can be wild, often in bright, unnatural colors or dreadlocks. Goggles, gas masks, and technological accessories like glowing armbands or circuit board patterns are key. Don't be afraid to mix textures – pleather, mesh, and metallic fabrics work wonders.
Carnival DTI:
Oh, the joy of Carnival! The outfit in my post featured voluminous red curly hair, a red and white carnival-themed dress, and red shoes, which placed 3rd! This theme screams vibrant colors, feathers, glitter, and elaborate masks. Think Rio Carnival or Mardi Gras. You can go for a full-on parade costume with a feathered headpiece, a sequined bodysuit, or a flowy, brightly colored gown. Don't forget the accessories: beads, streamers, and bold, festive makeup. The more flamboyant, the better!
Musical DTI:
This theme can be interpreted in so many ways, which makes it challenging but rewarding. My mint green floor-length dress with white cuffs and collar was for the 'MUSICAL' theme, placing 3rd. When tackling 'Musical,' you could channel a specific Broadway show (like a "Phantom of the Opera" inspired gown or a "Grease" leather jacket look), or go for a more general "performer" vibe. Think elegant evening wear for an opera, a jazz club outfit, or even a quirky costume from a beloved musical character. Instruments as props or musical note accessories can really tie it together.
Kawaii DTI (or Miku DTI):
This is all about cuteness overload! The character with long blue pigtails, a grey and blue outfit, and a microphone, representing the 'KAWAII' theme, placed 1st – showing how well a clear concept works! For Kawaii, pastel colors are a must, along with ruffles, bows, animal ears, and oversized sweaters. Think Japanese street fashion, anime characters, or even Harajuku style. Pigtails, knee-high socks, and cute patterned skirts are common. If you're going for a 'Miku' vibe, think bright turquoise hair, techno-inspired elements, and a vocaloid aesthetic.
Popstars vs Rockstars DTI:
This theme is about contrasting glam with grit! My outfit for this theme was red and black hair, a red top, black skirt, and fishnet stockings, placing 3rd. Popstars often wear flashy, glittery, and trendy outfits – think sequin dresses, cropped tops, neon colors, and elaborate hairstyles. Rockstars, on the other hand, are all about leather, ripped jeans, band tees, studded accessories, and a rebellious attitude. You can lean into one side or create a fusion. Bold makeup and exaggerated poses complete the look.
Late to School DTI:
This theme is surprisingly popular and quite relatable! The character in my post was in a white hoodie, black leggings, glasses, holding a purple phone and a drink. The key here is looking "thrown together" but still stylish. Think messy bun, oversized hoodie, comfortable but chic leggings or joggers, and maybe a pair of sneakers. Accessories like a backpack, sunglasses, or a coffee cup really sell the "just woke up and ran out the door" vibe. It's about looking effortlessly cool despite the rush.
Remember, the best DTI outfits tell a story. Pay attention to the details, from your hair and makeup to your accessories. Don't be afraid to mix and match items you already have, and always look for unique props to make your submission stand out. Good luck and happy DTI-ing!
