I had heard from many places that OWL Bakery North Asheville was a really good bakery. I did like them and they were super cute! The rose almond pastry was really different great flavors a little dry though. The matcha w/ vanilla syrup also wasn’t my favorite—had a weird kind of taste to it. I feel maybe they do the basics better, and again, when you go to a bakery later in the day sometimes the pastries are a little stale so maybe better right in the morning? Still would recommend giving a try I would def go back

... Read moreMy recent visit to OWL Bakery North Asheville was something I'd been looking forward to, hearing so many whispers about it as a must-visit spot in the Asheville bakery scene. Stepping inside, I immediately understood why it's considered 'super cute.' The interior of OWL Bakery North Asheville has this cozy yet modern charm, with a beautifully arranged counter showcasing an array of pastries. I noticed a clear menu board, making it easy to see their offerings, and there was a pleasant seating area with benches and chairs where local customers were already enjoying their treats. The natural light filtering in created a warm, inviting ambiance, making it feel like a perfect spot to unwind or catch up with a friend over a hot drink and a sweet treat. It's exactly the kind of place that makes you feel at home, even on a first visit.
Of course, I had to try one of their signature items. I opted for the rose almond pastry, which caught my eye immediately. It was beautifully presented, truly living up to the description of being dusted with powdered sugar and topped with delicate sliced almonds. Visually, it was a winner, almost too pretty to eat! The flavors were definitely unique and interesting, offering a lovely floral hint from the rose paired with the nutty almond. The combination was sophisticated and not overly sweet, which I appreciated. I will say, my particular pastry felt a little on the dry side, which was a slight bummer. Perhaps it was just the batch, or maybe I visited later in the day when pastries might not be at their absolute freshest. This makes me think that an early morning visit might be key to experiencing them at their peak, right when they come out of the oven.
To go with my pastry, I ordered the matcha latte with vanilla syrup. I’m a big fan of matcha, so I was excited to compare it to others I’ve had around town. It arrived as a vibrant iced green drink, looking incredibly refreshing, especially on a warmer day. However, I found the taste to be a bit unusual for my preference – it had a kind of 'weird taste' that I couldn't quite pinpoint. It wasn't too sweet, but the matcha flavor itself seemed to have an unexpected earthy note that didn't quite blend with the vanilla as I'd hoped. It wasn't bad, just not my favorite among the matcha lattes I’ve tried in Asheville. This made me wonder if maybe their more classic coffee offerings or perhaps a simpler pastry would be a safer bet for a first-timer, or if their hot matcha might have a different profile.
Despite these minor points with my specific choices, I still genuinely enjoyed my experience at OWL Bakery North Asheville. The atmosphere alone makes it worth a visit if you're looking for interesting things to do in Asheville. It's the kind of place that beckons you to linger, perhaps with a book or your laptop. My advice for anyone planning a trip? Definitely try to go earlier in the morning for the freshest selection of pastries – sometimes those late-day visits just don't do a bakery justice. I imagine their basic pastries, like a classic croissant or a simple fruit tart, might be exceptionally good, given the overall quality feel of the place. Plus, seeing the array behind the counter, there's clearly a lot more to explore. I would definitely go back, perhaps to try something different from their extensive menu or a standard coffee to get a fuller picture of what this charming bakery has to offer. It's a sweet little gem in North Asheville, and I'm keen to give it another shot to discover more of its delights.
