Random Hobby I Tried: Axe Throwing 🪓
Tried axe throwing at Craft Axe Throwing and honestly it was way more fun than I expected. At first I thought it would be hard, but once you get the hang of the throw it’s actually super satisfying when the axe sticks. It’s one of those activities that’s perfect with friends because everyone gets competitive in the best way. Don’t recommend drinking while throwing! Definitely adding this to my list of random hobbies that are surprisingly fun to try.
When I first saw the axe throwing lanes, my eyes immediately went to the targets. You know, those big, round wooden blocks? They're usually made of several planks of wood put together, which makes a really satisfying thud when your axe hits. My first few throws were, well, let's just say they didn't quite make it. But I kept watching how the instructors aimed, and I noticed they really focused on the bullseye. The target itself is pretty cool when you look at it up close. It's not just a plain wooden board. I remember seeing one with distinct black concentric circles, and then smaller red and blue dots inside for scoring. That bullseye, usually a smaller circle right in the center, becomes your ultimate goal. The satisfaction of seeing your axe embedded perfectly in that center bullseye is just unmatched! It’s like a mini victory dance every single time. I learned a few simple tips that totally changed my game. First, the grip! Hold the axe like you're shaking hands, not choking it. A firm but relaxed grip is key. Then, the stance: feet shoulder-width apart, non-dominant foot slightly forward. It felt a bit awkward at first, but it makes a huge difference in your balance and throw. The most important part? The throw itself! It's less about brute force and more about technique. You usually start with the axe behind your head, then swing it forward in a smooth, fluid motion. The trick is to release it at just the right moment so it rotates once (or twice, depending on distance) and lands blade-first. For the bullseye, it's all about consistency. Pick a spot on the target, focus your eyes, and try to replicate that same motion every time. Don't overthink it, just let your body do the work. What I found super helpful was noticing how the axe stuck. If it was landing handle-first, I needed to release it earlier. If it was over-rotating and landing butt-first, I was releasing too late. It's a quick adjustment, and suddenly, thwack! Right in the center. It's also interesting to see different scoring systems. Some places count the bullseye as 6 points, the next ring as 4, and the outer ring as 2. Sometimes there are even smaller 'kill shot' dots for bonus points, which are even harder to hit but incredibly rewarding. Knowing the scoring adds another layer of competition and strategy, especially when you're playing with friends. Getting a bullseye when it really counts? Best feeling ever! So, if you're curious about axe throwing, don't be intimidated by the target or the idea of hitting the bullseye. It's a skill you build, and every successful stick, especially into those black concentric circles or the coveted red and blue dots, feels like an achievement. It’s definitely an activity that challenges you in a fun way and provides that instant gratification when you see your axe perfectly lodged in the center of the target.
