no longer a mainlander 🇨🇳

hi frens im here to share my experience in cancelling my chinese citizenship! 🇨🇳➡️🇸🇬

a little background: i was born in china but came to SG as a toddler. was PR at first then got my singapore citizenship back in 2013 or so. there was a whole ceremony and i was given a PINK LAMINATED CITIZENSHIP CERTIFICATE so i thought i was alr fully SINGAPOREAN but WRONGGG 😭 apparently singapore gave me a free trial period till i turn 21

{ photocopy the laminated cert }

so: my 21st bday was Nov2025. few weeks later i received a letter in the mailbox asking me to cancel my CHINA citizenship and go ICA to do a pledge to officially become singaporean OR renounce SG citizen. U HAVE TO do before turning 22, which for me is before Nov2026

{{{ PLS KEEP THE LETTER THEY SEND U PLS!!!!!!!!!!! }}}

1️⃣ these are the items they asked me to bring. dont worry about photocopying cause there’s a photocopy machine at the embassy u can use for FREE (located beside the receptionist counter)

my first trip to the embassy was mainly to gauge what documents i actually needed. the receptionist crossed out the documents i DIDNT need. luckily my parents kept all my previous documents like re-entry permit, old china passport {latest china passport regardless if expired} and birth certificate

2️⃣ i got off at napier mrt cause its closest to the embassy. once u take the escalator up from Exit 2, as ure facing the road, make a RIGHT turn then jus keep walking straight

3️⃣ the walking path is NOT fully sheltered so pls bring umbrella or smth in case it rains or if weather extra sunny ☀️

4️⃣ if u never go embassy before, the orange/red shelter is the entrance. need do bag check (scanner)

5️⃣ this is the form they want u to fill up. PLS WRITE CAREFULLY 😭 i wrote wrongly and they asked me redo, cannot have any corrections / cancellation etc

the form is to be written ONLY in chinese characters. only 2 sections can write in english (company name + SG address)

i only understand abit of chinese so i asked my sis-in-law from china help me translate all the form stuff 👀👀

6️⃣ i couldnt read the handwriting example so i asked her type it out for me to copy LOL

7️⃣ receptionist will only give u a Q number once:

- form fully completed

- u have all required documents

they’ll check everything for u first

{ pls look for the TALL MALE receptionist cause he was more helpful 😭🙏 }

after getting the Q ticket just wait for ur number. usually counter 10/11. diff counters do diff things

i waited around 15-20mins even tho there were quite alot ppl. Q actually moved pretty fast 🫰

8️⃣ after counter staff reviewed my documents, she asked me photocopy:

- old china passport

- SG passport

{ SIDE-BY-SIDE }

she needed to see the ORIGINAL documents that i photocopied so pls bring everything just in case

( she asked if i changed my name which is No but just bring ur deed poll along if u did)

after passing her the photocopies she gave me a paper to collect the RENUNCIATION CERTIFICATE { this is needed pls bring along , collection+payment at counter 1 }

fee was $30 sgd NO CASH ❌ they only accepted:

-paynow

- NETS

-alipay

(from what i remember) NO PAYWAVE ❌

after collection i went ICA (lavender mrt) to do the pledge >>

bring:

- ic

- renunciation certificate

- pledge form

(is ok if u never print cause they provided me one there but better safe than sorry)

after that just fill form and say the pledge infront of officer

they’ll ask u scan QR code to submit passport renewal. dont need print passport photo cause all digital submission

BUT some of my frens told me they renewed on the same day at ICA 🤔 so maybe can ask

i actually went embassy 3 times:

1. know what docs i needed + get the form

2. submit form + documents

3.collect certificate

they actually have FREE WIFI 😭 look for it at the computer area after u go up the stairs

so if u dont understand chinese then u can use google translate/text ppl for help

also do expect urself going back few times cause maybe missing documents etc

their google says open 9am but the doors actually opened around 8:45am

🫶🫶🫶 lastly, senator im singaporean 🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁

... Read moreIf you're planning to renounce citizenship, especially in cases similar to mine with Malaysia or Singapore, it’s important to know the timeline and documentation needed. For example, renouncing Malaysian citizenship often involves submitting an application at the Malaysian embassy or relevant authorities, and the process can vary but usually takes several months. You need to prepare official documents such as your birth certificate, current and previous passports, and proof of new citizenship or residence. From my experience with the Chinese renunciation, preparation is key. Bring originals and photocopies of all necessary documents, keep all letters from immigration or relevant authorities, and don’t forget that some forms must be filled out in Chinese characters. If you’re not confident with the language, seek help from someone who can translate or type out the form clearly to avoid mistakes. Embassies often have specific protocols — expect several visits for submission, verification, and certificate collection. Payment methods can be cashless only, so prepare accordingly. Also, plan for weather when visiting as some walking paths may not be sheltered. Finally, after renouncing one citizenship, ensure you complete any pledges or official ceremonies required by your new country to confirm your new status. This aligned process makes your transition smoother and avoids any legal complications later. Hope my shared tips help you in your own renunciation journey!
