When we judge others

2024/12/11 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about something we probably all do, often without even realizing it: judging others. It’s a topic that really hit home for me after seeing a powerful message about it, much like that conversation in the image about someone judging a "Christian" who judges others. It made me pause and reflect on what it truly means to judge someone and why it's such a common human tendency. So, what exactly is judging others? At its core, judging someone means forming a critical opinion about them, their actions, or their character, often based on limited information or our own biases, and usually with a sense of superiority. It's different from discernment, which is about making wise decisions or evaluating situations. When we judge, we're often condemning or belittling, rather than seeking to understand or help. For example, maybe you've heard someone say, "Bro, have you seen that guy over there? He's a Christian but judges other people, it's crazy." This perfectly illustrates how easily we fall into the trap of judging, even when pointing out someone else's judgment. Why do we judge? That's a huge question, and I've found there are so many layers to it. Sometimes, it stems from our own insecurities. If we feel inadequate, pointing out flaws in others can temporarily make us feel better about ourselves. Other times, it's a projection – we see in others what we dislike or fear in ourselves. There's also the element of self-righteousness, where we believe our way of doing things is the "right" way, and anyone deviating from that is wrong. We might even judge out of fear, like when we judge someone who is different from us because we don't understand their choices or lifestyle. The impact of being judgemental of others isn't just on the person being judged; it really affects us too. When I'm busy picking apart someone else, I'm not focusing on my own growth or being present. It creates a barrier between me and others, preventing genuine connection and empathy. What I learned from that profound message reminded me of God's perspective: when we point fingers, often "all you're doing is judging him yourself," as the message wisely put it. It highlights that no one is without sin. So, how can we move towards less judgment and more acceptance? It’s a journey, not a destination, but here are some things I've found helpful: Practice self-awareness: Notice when you're judging and *why*. Is it a knee-jerk reaction? What emotion is driving it? Seek to understand: Instead of jumping to conclusions, try to understand the other person's perspective. Ask yourself: "What might I not know about this person or situation?" Remember your own imperfections: We all have flaws and make mistakes. Recalling this can foster humility and empathy. The Bible, specifically Galatians 6:1, offers powerful guidance here: "Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted." This verse isn't about condemnation but restoration and self-reflection. It's about "accepting" others, even when they "sin differently than you do." Focus on kindness: Choose to respond with kindness and compassion, even when it's difficult. Challenge your biases: We all have preconceived notions. Actively work to identify and challenge them. Ultimately, stopping judging others is about cultivating a more compassionate heart, both for ourselves and for those around us. It's about recognizing our shared humanity and embracing the call for "accepting" others, just as God accepts us. I hope sharing my thoughts on the meaning of judging others helps you on your journey too!
