... Read moreHey everyone! I wanted to share a bit more about my recent Natsuki Subaru drawing from Re:Zero. When I decided to sketch him, I really wanted to convey his complex personality and the challenges he faces in the anime. He's such a compelling character, always pushing through despite everything, which is why I was drawn to depicting him.
For those of you looking to learn how to draw Natsuki Subaru, or any anime character, I'll walk you through some of my process. I always start with a light sketch to get the basic proportions right. For Subaru, his distinct tracksuit is a key element, so getting the folds and fit right is important. I used a regular graphite pencil for this, working on a page in my trusty spiral-bound sketchbook. Layering is key for depth! Starting with lighter lines and gradually adding more pressure for darker shades really helps define the forms and textures.
Capturing his facial expression was probably the most challenging but also the most rewarding part. While many know him for his 'determined face' or serious expressions, I opted for a slightly different, more introspective moment. I focused on depicting him with that specific 'shush' gesture, which implies a secret, a moment of contemplation, or perhaps a quiet warning. This pose, with him in a thoughtful squatting position, allowed me to play with perspective and show a different side of his character beyond just his battle-ready look. It was a fun challenge to make the gesture feel natural and expressive.
When you're doing fan art like this Natsuki Subaru drawing, pay close attention to the character's unique features. His hairstyle, his eyes, even the way his tracksuit wrinkles – these small details make the drawing recognizable and truly bring it to life. Don't be afraid to experiment with different poses, like this squatting pose, to add dynamism and narrative to your art. And remember, practice makes perfect! Every stroke in this pencil drawing helped me get closer to the final image I had in mind. It's incredibly rewarding to see your favorite heroes come to life through your own hands. Happy drawing, everyone!
