DIY Tracksuit Jacket from a Mattress Cover

I made a DIY tracksuit jacket by upcycling a mattress cover! I used New Look 6142 sewing pattern, which is such a classic. 🪡

It has a zip-up front and nice big front pockets. I really like this hoodie and have sewn this pattern many times. 🧵

I didn’t know what to do with this fabric, but then inspiration hit me. But it was sad in the end because it burned in the California wildfires last year. 🥺

Anyway, I share more pictures and details about it on my blog. Be sure to save this for an idea.

... Read moreUpcycling fabric like a mattress cover to create a tracksuit jacket is such a rewarding project, especially for those who love sewing and sustainability. When I first started using mattress covers for apparel, I was pleasantly surprised by the durability and texture of the material. It's thick enough to provide structure but still comfortable to wear as a casual jacket. Using a well-known sewing pattern like New Look 6142 makes the construction process smoother, given its straightforward design and versatile style. One personal tip is to carefully cut the mattress cover fabric, as it can be thicker than typical clothing fabrics—using sharp scissors or a rotary cutter helps achieve clean edges. Adding features like a zip-up front and roomy pockets not only enhances the jacket’s practicality but also its sporty aesthetic. I found that reinforcing the seams, especially around the zipper and pocket areas, ensures longer wear and better shape retention. Another meaningful aspect of this project is sustainable fashion. Upcycling helps reduce waste, and turning something like a mattress cover into a wearable tracksuit jacket is a creative way to keep materials in use. Though the original fabric in this project was sadly lost in wildfires—a reminder of the fragility of our resources—the idea lives on as inspiration. If you’re considering a similar upcycling project, start by sourcing mattress covers or similar fabric you no longer need. Experiment with sewing techniques, and don’t hesitate to customize details like pocket size or zipper style to reflect your personal taste. Happy sewing, and enjoy the satisfaction that comes with making something uniquely yours from unexpected materials!
