🚨Signs You Might Be a People-Pleaser
Here’s some signs and how they’ve affected me:
❌ You struggle to say no – Even when you’re exhausted or don’t want to do something, you feel obligated to say yes. I have struggled with that a lot to the point where people don't really expect me to say no, and I feel extremely guilty when I do.
😰 You feel guilty when you prioritize yourself – Taking care of your own needs feels selfish, even though it’s necessary. When you don’t prioritize yourself, others don’t either. Growing up in my culture, I wasn’t allowed to do my own stuff unless I did what the adults in my life wanted me to do. That gave me a weird complex where everyone else’s stuff was more important than my own.
😶 You avoid conflict at all costs – You’d rather stay silent than speak up, even when you know you’re right. I’m kinda confrontational, but for some reasons I struggle to speak up when the people closest to me are taking advantage of me. I already feel like I don’t really have anyone.
👍 You constantly seek validation – You feel uneasy if someone is upset with you and need reassurance that you’re liked. This is to the point where sometimes I don’t even like the person but I have to make sure they like me.
⚡ You feel drained from doing too much for others – Your time and energy go to pleasing people, leaving you mentally and physically exhausted. There’s a constant need to have everyone around me happy even when I’m not.
🙊 You apologize too much – Even for things that aren’t your fault, you say “sorry” just to keep the peace. I had a friend constantly tell me that I needed to stop apologizing. He would say ‘for what?’ ‘Why are you apologizing’ ‘just end your sentence here’ because I was saying sorry every five seconds. It just felt needed and normal to me.
💡 Been there, done that. It took me a while to realize that constantly putting others first was draining me. Learning to set boundaries and put myself first without guilt has been a game changer and hard but I’m trying.
