🌿Lets talk Deitys🌿
This is a huge part of my practice and so ill do a three part post of how does one work with deitys 🙂
Starting deity work can be a deeply personal and rewarding spiritual practice. Here’s a beginner-friendly guide to help you get started, along with ways to find a deity that resonates with you.🩶
Understanding Deity Work
Deity work is about forming a relationship with a divine being, whether from a structured pantheon (Greek, Norse, Egyptian, etc.) or a more personal, eclectic spirituality. This relationship can involve offerings, prayers, meditation, or simply studying the deity.
Step 1: Clarify Your Intentions
Ask yourself why you want to connect with a deity. Is it for guidance, empowerment, healing, or understanding? Knowing your intention will help you recognize when a deity reaches out to you.
Step 2: Research & Exploration
Start by reading about different pantheons and deities. Look at:
• Their mythology, attributes, and symbols.
• Their values and associations (e.g., Hecate for witchcraft, Thor for protection, Brigid for creativity and healing).
• How they were historically worshipped.
Good resources include books, online archives (like Theoi.com for Greek mythology), and folklore studies.
Step 3: Signs & Synchronicities
Pay attention to recurring symbols, dreams, or feelings of connection. Sometimes, deities reach out through:
• Dreams and meditative visions.
• Symbols appearing frequently (e.g., crows for Odin, deer for Artemis).
• Strong emotional or energetic pulls toward a specific mythology.
Step 4: Start a Devotional Practice
Once you feel drawn to a deity, begin interacting with them by:
• Creating an Altar: A small space with their symbols, colors, and offerings.
• Offering Rituals: Giving appropriate offerings (e.g., honey for Aphrodite, wine for Dionysus, bread for Hestia).
• Prayer & Meditation: Speaking to them and listening for responses.
• Journaling: Document signs, dreams, and feelings for deeper understanding.
Step 5: Build a Relationship
This takes time, much like any relationship. Be consistent in your devotion, but also open to change. Some deities may step forward for a short time, while others become lifelong guides.

After taking those initial steps into deity work, you might be wondering, 'What's next?' Or perhaps you're still feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of deities out there. I certainly was! My journey with connecting to divine beings truly deepened when I started looking beyond the basic pantheons and really honed in on *listening*. One of the best pieces of advice I can give, especially for those of you exploring 'how to work with deities' as beginners, is to immerse yourself in the stories. Don't just read summaries; delve into the myths and cultural contexts. For example, if you're drawn to figures like Artemis, goddess of the hunt and wild places, exploring her myths can reveal so much about her energy and values. Similarly, learning about Persephone's journey can offer insights into cycles of transformation and resilience. Resources like the 'Pagan Portals' series, and various online archives, offer incredible depth and can be a fantastic way to feel a connection before you even light your first candle. Beyond formal research, pay attention to the subtle whispers of the universe. Sometimes a deity might reach out through repeated symbols in your daily life, or even vivid dreams. I remember once seeing a particularly striking image of a witch character with a magical circle, and it felt like a strong nudge towards exploring certain pagan traditions. These aren't always grand pronouncements; sometimes it's just a feeling, a song, or a recurring animal. Trust your intuition – it's a powerful guide in 'deity work for beginners'. Don't feel pressured to pick one deity right away. It's okay to explore and even work with multiple divine energies as your path unfolds. I often used guided visualisations to help me connect more deeply during meditation, imagining myself in sacred spaces, perhaps a mystical forest under a star-lit sky, where I could feel closer to these energies. Setting up an altar, even a small one, with symbols and candles that resonate with the deity you're exploring, can create a powerful focal point. It doesn't have to be elaborate; sometimes just a single lit candle and a quiet intention are enough. What if you don't feel a strong connection right away? That's perfectly normal! Building a relationship, even with divine beings, takes time, consistency, and patience. Keep journaling your experiences, reflecting on your prayers and offerings, and remain open. Sometimes, the deity you think you're meant to work with isn't the one who truly resonates with your soul. The most important thing is to approach this path with respect, an open heart, and a genuine desire for connection. It's a truly enriching journey that brings so much depth and meaning to my spiritual practice.
