Try to step into their shoes, even if just for a moment, and acknowledge that their experience is valid *for them*. You don't have to experience the same thing to offer understanding. Another crucial part of this non-judgmental listening cycle is holding back your immediate reactions. It's natural to want to fix things or share your own perspective, but sometimes, what people need most is simply to be heard. Interrupting to give advice or share a similar story, while well-intentioned, can sometimes make the speaker feel like their unique experience isn't being fully acknowledged. Asking open-ended questions like, "How did that make that make you feel?" or "What was that like for you?" can encourage deeper sharing without leading them to a specific answer. There are so many complex reasons behind people's decisions, especially when it comes to relationships and financial stability. Sometimes, when we're in situations where we feel like we just have to 'endure it,' what we really need is someone to simply listen to our struggles without adding another layer of expectation or criticism.
