It’s that season in Michigan for rock hard grapes 🥳
I love working with these & the customers appreciate them as well! Candied grapes otw 🥰
Hey everyone! If you’re anything like me, you absolutely adore a good, crisp grape. But when it comes to making candied grapes, not just any grape will do. I’ve learned through a lot of trial and error (and many sticky kitchen adventures!) that the secret really lies in starting with the perfect foundation: super firm, green crunchy grapes. Around here in Michigan, when it’s grape season, we’re blessed with some fantastic varieties that are naturally 'rock hard.' These are the absolute gold standard for candying. Why does the crunch matter so much, you ask? Well, imagine biting into a beautifully candied grape only for it to be soft and mushy inside. Disappointing, right? The firmness of these particular green crunchy grapes means they hold their shape wonderfully through the candying process, giving you that satisfying pop and chew that makes candied grapes so irresistible. They don't get soggy, and the vibrant flavor of the grape really shines through the sweet coating. When I’m at the market, I always look for tight clusters of green crunchy grapes. I gently squeeze a few to make sure they’re truly firm – no give at all! The color should be a bright, consistent green, and of course, I prefer seedless varieties for ease of eating. Once I get them home, proper preparation is key. I wash them thoroughly under cold water, then lay them out on a clean kitchen towel to air dry completely. This step is crucial; any excess moisture will prevent your candy coating from sticking properly. Sometimes, if I'm in a hurry, I'll even gently pat each grape dry. It might sound tedious, but trust me, it makes all the difference in achieving that perfectly smooth, glassy coating. While candied grapes are definitely my favorite way to use these beauties, their incredible crunch makes them versatile for so many other things. I love tossing them into a fresh summer salad for a burst of sweetness and texture, or simply keeping a bowl of them in the fridge for a refreshing, healthy snack. You can even freeze them for a delightful, icy treat on a hot day – they’re like tiny, natural sorbet bites! The green crunchy grapes hold up so well to freezing, maintaining their integrity much better than softer varieties. They’re also fantastic on a cheese board, offering a lovely contrast to creamy cheeses. So, whether you're planning to whip up a batch of those addictive candied grapes or just looking for a truly satisfying snack, keep an eye out for those firm, green crunchy grapes. They’re a seasonal treasure, and once you experience the difference, you’ll never go back to anything less!
