Volunteering as a pianist at the National University Hospital Medical Centre has been one of my most fulfilling experiences. Playing live music in a hospital setting allows me to connect with patients and staff in a deeply meaningful way. Many patients have expressed how the melodies helped ease their anxiety and brought moments of calm during treatment. Performing at Level 3 of the Medical Centre feels like sharing a gift, turning the bustling hospital atmosphere into a soothing space. The staff showed genuine appreciation for the music, often stopping to listen between their duties, which made me feel part of their community. In addition to live performances, I have found that choosing a diverse repertoire—from classical pieces to gentle contemporary tunes—helps reach different audiences and enhances the therapeutic effect of music. This volunteer role requires not only musical skill but also empathy and sensitivity to the needs of hospital visitors. If you're passionate about music and want to contribute to healing through art, volunteering as a pianist at NUH or similar institutions can be incredibly rewarding. Engaging with patients’ stories and witnessing the comfort music can provide gives a unique perspective on the power of volunteerism combined with the arts. Overall, this experience has deepened my appreciation for the healing environment hospitals strive to create and how music can play a vital part in that journey.
