Rough shift but we pushed through 🫶
Hey everyone! I just had one of those shifts where you know it's going to be rough when you're already in fresh surgical scrubs not even halfway through! It was a whirlwind, truly, but it got me thinking about all the emerging nurses out there who might be facing similar days. I wanted to share some of what I’ve learned about not just surviving, but actually thriving through these challenging times. Every seasoned nurse has been through their fair share of 'rough shifts,' and these moments are where we truly grow and build our resilience. First and foremost, preparation is absolutely key to navigating tough days. Before your shift even begins, try to prioritize good rest, stay hydrated, and fuel yourself with a solid meal. Mentally, I try to go in with a flexible mindset, knowing that anything can happen and that I'll adapt. I also pack extra snacks – brain food is essential! – and, yes, sometimes even a spare set of scrubs, just in case, like today! Being prepared physically and mentally can make a world of difference when unexpected challenges arise. During the shift, effective prioritization is your best friend. When things hit the fan and you feel overwhelmed, take a quick moment to assess what’s truly urgent and what can realistically wait. Don't be afraid to utilize your resources; asking for help from your colleagues or charge nurse isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of good judgment and teamwork. We're all in this together! Also, taking even a quick five-minute break to grab water, stretch, or just breathe deeply can significantly impact your focus and stamina. These small pauses can prevent burnout and help you reset. Post-shift recovery is crucial for your long-term well-being and career longevity. When you finally clock out, try your best to leave work at work. I find it incredibly helpful to decompress by listening to music, enjoying a comforting meal, or talking to a supportive friend or family member who understands the demands of the job. It’s important not to dwell on every single thing that might have gone wrong; instead, reflect on what you learned. Every tough shift, like the one where I had to change into surgical scrubs unexpectedly, is a lesson in resilience, problem-solving, and patient care. It’s an opportunity to refine your skills and build confidence. For emerging nurses, these hard days are often where true leadership skills begin to form. It’s about taking initiative, communicating effectively with your team and patients, and showing up with your best even when things are incredibly tough. Remember that every experienced nurse has been exactly where you are now, navigating the steep learning curve. You are capable, you are constantly learning, and you are making a profound difference in people's lives. Keep pushing through, and know that each 'rough shift' makes you stronger, more confident, and better equipped to lead and provide exceptional care to your patients.
