What I packed for my 12 hr nightshift as a nurse 🍪
Working a 12-hour nightshift as a nurse demands meals and snacks that provide sustained energy, are easy to eat during breaks, and help maintain focus. Based on my experience, packing a variety of foods like rice with fire-roasted vegetables and Amylu basil & parmesan chicken meatballs offers a balanced combination of carbohydrates, protein, and veggies to keep me energized. For snacks, options like cherry tomatoes and turkey sticks paired with Babybel cheese provide a good mix of nutrients and are convenient to eat on the go. I find that including a small sweet treat such as cookie dough overnight oats not only satisfies cravings but also provides slow-releasing energy to prevent sugar crashes during long shifts. Hydration is equally important. I usually carry sparkling energy drinks with refreshing flavors like watermelon lime, along with herbal teas such as peppermint, dandelion, and raspberry leaf tea. These help me stay alert and reduce fatigue. Meal prepping for nightshifts requires planning meals that won’t spoil and can be eaten cold or easily reheated. I recommend preparing food in advance and using containers that fit easily in a nurse’s locker or break room fridge. Preparing diverse, nutrient-rich meals and snacks tailored to your preferences helps maintain energy levels and supports overall well-being during demanding nightshift work.
