I Bought You A House: Real Estate as Love Language

✨Finally, some historical images that ~won’t~ get me in trouble with the IG censors. ✨

Luckily, these images aren’t any less steamy, because beautiful real estate is sexy, especially when it’s a gift from a hot duke or earl. Yes, THREE of my books have this trope, which was not at all intentional on my part, I just think it’s a swoony gesture, what can I say?!

In fact, the sexiness of real estate is really at the heart of the historical romance genre. Famously, in Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth first really feels attracted to Darcy (and able to imagine marrying him) when she sees Pemberley. There is also this kind of wild scene where she eats the fruit that comes from the Pemberley estate and is like mmm such beautiful fruit and it’s ~very~ sensual. In short, the real estate thing—“to be mistress of Pemberley might be something!”—is very much baked into the DNA of the genre.

What are your favorite real-estate-as-love-language moments in historical romance? Let me know!! #historicalromance #regencyromance #regencyromancebooks

... Read moreReal estate has long been a symbolic gesture of love, status, and security in historical romance narratives, creating a rich backdrop for emotional connection and plot development. In this genre, the act of gifting or sharing a home embodies more than material wealth—it signifies trust, belonging, and a promise of a future together. This theme is vividly illustrated in classic literature such as Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, where Elizabeth Bennet’s changing feelings toward Mr. Darcy are closely tied to her impression of Pemberley estate—representing not only his wealth but also his character and the life they might share. Modern historical romance authors continually reinvent this trope, using real estate as a narrative device to deepen relationships and explore characters’ desires. From a city girl purchasing a suburban house to bridge differences with her country-loving partner, to dukes buying adjacent estates for their beloveds, these stories highlight how property ownership symbolizes emotional bonds and personal transformations. The diversity of examples—from townhouses in London suburbs with charming erotic bookstores to ancestral homes tailored to impress—showcases the appeal of making a house a home as an expression of love and compromise. The connection between property and love in these stories also taps into broader themes like societal expectations, gender roles, and personal agency. For women characters who have lost family estates or face uncertain futures, regaining or acquiring a home can represent empowerment and security offered by their partners. Meanwhile, for male characters, the gifting of land or home often conveys commitment and the promise of a shared legacy. It’s a gesture that blends romance with realism, grounding the passionate elements of the story in familiar, tangible symbols. For readers and writers alike, this fusion of real estate and romance enriches the genre by adding layers of meaning and desire. It invites audiences to imagine love expressed through the very spaces we inhabit, making property ownership an emotional catalyst. As historical romance continues to evolve, the trope of buying or giving a house remains a compelling, swoony motif that resonates deeply with the genre’s DNA.
