When I set out to write this one, I wanted to craft a true alpha heroine, one who begins the book in the position of many old-school historical heroes: rich, notorious, beautiful, somehow both a beneficiary of inherited privilege and a self-made “billionaire,” with societal power and emotional wounds in equal measure. And I wanted a hero who—like many a strong heroine paired with such an alpha—wouldn’t be scared off by her power and instead find himself in thrall to her.
