Madison, Indiana

We stayed the night at Clifty Falls State Park. It had beautiful waterfalls and a nice view of the Ohio Rive and downtown Madison. Make sure to get the river view balcony room. Make sure you have room to shop downtown Madison.

⭐️Overall rating: 10/10: The Crêperie

Champs De Bluets- blueberry crepe

... Read moreBeyond the amazing views of the Ohio River from the lodge balcony, Clifty Falls State Park is an absolute gem for nature lovers, and it's where you'll find some of Madison's most iconic natural landmarks. My favorite part was exploring the hiking trails – they range from easy strolls to more challenging treks. If you're up for an adventure, definitely seek out the trails leading to the various waterfalls. While I didn't get to hike all of them, the sheer beauty of the Clifty Falls themselves, especially after a good rain, is breathtaking. And for those wondering about that famous spot, Hanging Rock is a must-see. It's truly a unique geological formation within the park that offers incredible panoramic views, making for some epic photo opportunities. Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check trail conditions! Downtown Madison itself is a treasure trove. The original article briefly mentioned shopping, but it's worth elaborating on. The historic district is filled with charming antique shops, unique boutiques, and art galleries. I loved just wandering the streets, admiring the well-preserved 19th-century architecture. It felt like stepping back in time! You can easily spend an afternoon browsing for unique souvenirs or finding that perfect gift. Don't miss stopping into some of the local artisan shops; I found some beautiful handcrafted items. While Lanier Mansion State Historic Site was a fantastic dive into Indiana's past, Madison offers even more for history buffs. The entire downtown area is a National Historic Landmark District, and you can take self-guided walking tours to learn about the different architectural styles and the stories behind the buildings. There are also several other historic homes open for tours during certain seasons, each with its own fascinating narrative. It truly gives you a sense of the rich history of this Ohio River town. And let's talk food! While The Crêperie was an undeniable highlight with their delicious blueberry and mixed berry crepes and refreshing lavender lemonade – truly a 10/10 experience – Madison has a surprisingly vibrant culinary scene. From cozy cafes to pubs with local brews and farm-to-table restaurants, there's something for every palate. I regretted not having more time to try out other spots, but I heard great things about the local diners for breakfast and the riverside restaurants for dinner, offering stunning views of the Ohio River as you dine. My top tip: always ask the locals for their hidden gem recommendations! A quick tip for planning your visit: many of the attractions, especially the state park, are best enjoyed during warmer months for hiking and outdoor activities. However, the historic sites and downtown shopping are lovely year-round. Parking can be a bit tricky in prime season, so arriving early is often a good idea. Overall, Madison, Indiana, exceeded my expectations as a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and delightful culinary experiences. It's truly a destination worth adding to your travel list!
