Shrimp Sausage Dirty Rice Recipe
Ingredients You’ll Need
1 lb ground beef
1 lb ground sausage
10–12 shrimp, peeled and deveined
4 cups cooked rice
2 cups chicken broth
1.5 cups mixed onions and bell peppers, chopped
3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
1 teaspoon seafood seasoning
1/4 cup flour
1 tablespoon oregano
3 teaspoons minced garlic
1 teaspoon thyme
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Salt, to taste
Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
Kitchen Equipment Needed:
Large skillet or sauté pan
Wooden spoon or spatula
Cutting board and knife
Measuring spoons and cups
Mixing bowl
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Season & Cook the Shrimp
Season the shrimp with seafood seasoning to infuse them with flavor. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a pan.
2. Brown the Meat
Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil to the same skillet. Brown the ground beef and sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Once browned, add the chopped onions, bell peppers, and minced garlic. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
3. Add Seasonings & Flour
Stir in the oregano, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if you like a bit of heat). Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and stir well to combine. This step helps thicken the dish and brings everything together.
4. Simmer with Broth
Pour in the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 5–7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the broth to thicken slightly.
5. Combine with Rice
Add the cooked rice to the skillet and mix well. Simmer for another 5 minutes so the rice can absorb all the delicious flavors.
6. Finish with Shrimp
Gently fold the cooked shrimp back into the skillet. Give it a final stir, making sure everything is evenly combined. Serve hot and enjoy!
Tips for Success
Use Day-Old Rice: Leftover rice works best for this recipe as it’s less sticky and absorbs the flavors better.
Customize the Protein: Swap shrimp for chicken, or use turkey sausage for a lighter option.
Adjust the Spice Level: Add more cayenne pepper or hot sauce for extra heat, or omit it altogether for a milder dish.
Vegetarian Option: Replace the meat with mushrooms and plant-based sausage.
Storage and Reheating:
Refrigerator:
Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer: Freeze portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 2 months.
Reheating:
Reheat in a skillet over medium heat, adding a splash of chicken broth or water to bring back the moisture.
