My first trip to Tulum, Mexico, was an absolute dream, and I can't wait to share my personal travel guide and tips with you! This vibrant destination truly offers something for everyone, whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or just looking to relax on beautiful beaches. I hope my experience helps you plan your own unforgettable journey to this stunning part of the Yucatán Peninsula. First off, when you're planning your visit, think about the best time to go. I found that visiting outside of peak season (like late spring or fall) meant fewer crowds and still gorgeous weather. Getting to Tulum is quite straightforward; I flew into Cancun International Airport (CUN) and then took a comfortable shuttle directly to my accommodation in Tulum. You can also opt for a rental car, which gives you more flexibility to explore attractions near Tulum at your own pace. Now, for the absolute must-see attractions in Tulum! The Tulum Ruins are an iconic historical site perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. I highly recommend getting there early in the morning right when they open to beat the heat and the crowds. The admission fee was very reasonable, and walking through this ancient Mayan port city, imagining life centuries ago, was truly breathtaking. It’s one of the top things to do in Tulum and offers incredible photo opportunities. Beyond the ruins, exploring the captivating cenotes is a quintessential Tulum activity. These natural swimming holes, often hidden in caves, are perfect for a refreshing dip. Each cenote has its own unique charm, from open-air pools surrounded by lush jungle to intricate underground caverns. My personal favorites were Gran Cenote for its clear waters and stalactite formations, and Cenote Calavera, which was a bit more adventurous with its three jumping holes. Don't forget your snorkel gear – the underwater world is mesmerizing! For those looking for off the beaten path experiences, a visit to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is a must-do. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a protected natural area teeming with wildlife, including dolphins, manatees, and countless bird species. I booked a guided tour which included a boat ride through the mangroves and ancient Mayan canals, followed by a drift through a natural lazy river. It was an incredible way to connect with nature and see a different side of Tulum away from the main tourist hubs. Planning your visit to Sian Ka'an often requires booking ahead, and it's well worth the effort to experience its pristine beauty. There are so many more Tulum activities to enjoy. Spend a day relaxing on Tulum's stunning beaches, like Playa Paraíso, known for its picturesque palm trees and soft sands. Explore the vibrant town itself, with its bohemian boutiques, art installations, and delicious eateries. From fresh seafood to authentic tacos, the food scene is incredible! Remember to bring biodegradable sunscreen to protect the delicate ecosystem, and stay hydrated, especially when you're out exploring the attractions in Tulum. This guide just scratches the surface of what Tulum has to offer, but these were definitely my highlights and the things I think everyone must do in Tulum. It’s a magical place that blends history, nature, and relaxation perfectly. Happy travels!
