Getting those perfect, bouncy curls that last all day used to feel like a dream for me, but after a lot of trial and error, I've finally nailed down a routine that works wonders! If you're struggling to get your curls to hold or just want to achieve that salon-quality look from home, keep reading, because I'm about to spill all my secrets. First things first, prep is absolutely crucial. I always start with freshly washed hair. After shampooing and conditioning (I love using my favorite Verb Products for this!), I gently towel dry my hair until it's damp, not soaking wet. Then, I apply a heat protectant generously. This step is non-negotiable for protecting your strands from the high heat of the curling iron. I usually let my hair air dry about 80% of the way, or if I'm in a hurry, I'll rough dry it with a blow dryer on a medium setting. Once my hair is mostly dry, I divide it into manageable sections. This makes the curling process much easier and ensures every strand gets attention. I typically start with the bottom layers, clipping the rest of my hair up and out of the way. For my curling iron, I absolutely swear by my Bio Ionic tool; it heats up quickly and creates beautiful, consistent curls. When curling, I take about 1-inch sections of hair. For a classic curl, I wrap the hair around the barrel, away from my face, holding it for about 8-10 seconds. For a more relaxed, beachy vibe, I might alternate the direction of the curls on different sections. Now, for that gorgeous volume! After releasing each curl from the iron, instead of letting it drop, I gently catch it in my hand and roll it up towards my scalp, securing it with a small clip. This allows the curl to cool and set in its shape, which is a game-changer for longevity and bounce. This technique really helps with volumixing the hair from the roots down. Once all my hair is curled and clipped, I let it cool completely – usually while I do my makeup. This cooling time is essential; it’s what locks in the curl pattern. Once my hair is completely cool, I unclip all the curls. At this point, they might look a bit too perfect or tight. To achieve a more natural, soft look (like a fresh blowout!), I gently run my fingers through my hair to break up the curls. Avoid brushing them out immediately, as this can make them fall flat. For an extra boost of volume and texture, I sometimes flip my head upside down and give it a good shake. To seal the deal, I finish with a lightweight finishing spray. My current favorite is from Amika or IGK Hair – it provides flexible hold without making my hair feel crunchy. This final touch truly makes all the difference in keeping my curls looking fresh and vibrant throughout the day. With these steps, you’ll be rocking beautiful, bouncy curls that feel soft and look stunning!
