Ikumi Tachibana

You know, every OC has a journey, right? And my beloved A3! character, Ikumi Tachibana, has definitely been on one! I've been getting a lot of questions about her, especially with her recent techwear transformation, so I wanted to share a deeper dive into her world and my creative process. Creating Ikumi was always about embodying a certain edgy charm, and for a long time, her professional goth aesthetic felt just right. I imagined her with that classic black and white hair and intense red eyes, commanding attention. But as her story evolved in my head, I realized she needed a style that reflected her growth and resilience. That's where the techwear came in! I was inspired by the idea of someone who's practical, strategic, and always prepared, much like a director would need to be. The dark tech-wear clothing isn't just a fashion statement for her; it’s almost like a second skin, blending functionality with a unique, modern edge. Thinking about her background, it makes so much sense. Ikumi is a 24-year-old director, and let me tell you, that path isn't for the faint of heart! It takes a strong, detail-oriented personality, which I think the techwear look really highlights. She's also an ex-actress, which gives her a deep understanding of the stage and how to bring a vision to life. This duality – being both behind and in front of the camera – really shapes her character. Her connections to characters like Tsumugi, Tasuku, and Itaru are so important to her narrative. I envision her as a steadfast friend, someone they can truly rely on. And discovering she's also an aunt to Azumi adds another layer of warmth and responsibility to her otherwise cool exterior. It's those little details that make her feel so real to me. When I was working on her redesign, I played around with different elements. I loved incorporating the extensive tattoos and piercings—it’s a nod to her rebellious spirit and her past, even as she embraces a more streamlined future. You might notice glimpses of her with black and teal hair, or even dark blue and black hair with light blue eyes in some of my earlier sketches or alternative looks. Each version tells a part of her story, but this current techwear iteration with her signature black and white hair and red eyes feels like her most authentic self right now. For any fellow digital artists out there wondering about the process, it’s all about finding that core essence of your character. What does their clothing say about their personality, their job, their relationships? For Ikumi, her techwear signifies her readiness, her control, and her bold artistic vision. It’s been an incredible journey bringing her to life, and I'm so excited to see where her story goes next!
