Menstrual Cramp Smoothie

I don’t always like taking medicine, sometimes I don’t even have medicine at the time, and most medicines that I have tried don’t work for my menstrual cramps.

Heating pads feel great, and drinking water is important, too. Sometimes doing things around the house or getting out and exercising helps because it takes your mind off of the cramps, but obviously that’s hard to do when you’re already in pain and lying down.

I hadn’t even had anything to eat yet, so I decided to try a smoothie, knowing that certain ingredients helped with symptoms of menstrual cramps like bloating and inflammation. I was pretty skeptical about it actually making me feel any better, but the effects were pretty close to immediate until my cramps completely went away within 30 minutes or so. Maybe it was a coincidence and the cramping just ran its course. Maybe the smoothie really did work. Either way, my cramps are gone, and the smoothie was absolutely delicious and filling.

Obviously, there are a few changes I would’ve made, but these are the ingredients I currently had on hand. I typically try to use a healthier nut butter or peanut butter brand with less sugar and garbage, but this one was on sale and was already in my pantry. I thought about adding some cashews, but I thought the peanut butter was enough and was better for a smoothie. In hindsight, I probably should’ve just used regular milk instead of the oat milk because apparently dairy also helps, and as far as the dark chocolate goes, I would’ve opted for something else, but this is all I had.

🍌 Ingredients:

• half a cup of vanilla yogurt.

• 1 heaping tablespoon of nut butter

• 1 banana

• 1 cup of vanilla oat milk (you can use any milk or non-dairy product that you prefer)

• dark chocolate

• 1 tablespoon of Chia seeds

• 1 teaspoon of Turmeric powder

• 1 tablespoon of honey

... Read moreAs someone who has struggled with debilitating period cramps for years, I completely understand the frustration of trying everything and feeling like nothing truly helps. Like many of you, I've tried various remedies, from over-the-counter pain relievers to heating pads, but often found myself still curled up in pain. That’s why I was so surprised when this homemade smoothie, packed with specific ingredients, actually made a noticeable difference! When I started researching “what is good food for period cramps,” I kept running into articles about anti-inflammatory ingredients. That’s when I decided to experiment with a smoothie, incorporating some of these powerhouses. In my experience, focusing on what I eat during my period has been a game-changer. Let me tell you a bit more about why some of the ingredients in my smoothie, and other foods, are so beneficial for period pain and bloating. First off, Turmeric powder is a star player. I've read so much about its incredible anti-inflammatory properties, thanks to a compound called curcumin. Including just a teaspoon in my smoothie felt like I was giving my body a natural pain reliever. Then there are Chia seeds – these tiny seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are also known for their anti-inflammatory effects, and fiber, which helps with digestion and can reduce that uncomfortable period bloating. I always try to include them for that extra boost! Bananas are another must-have. They’re rich in potassium, which can help prevent bloating and muscle cramping. Plus, they add a lovely natural sweetness and creaminess to the smoothie. And who can forget Dark chocolate? Not only is it a delicious treat, but it's also a good source of magnesium, which is crucial for muscle relaxation. For me, a little bit of dark chocolate feels like a comforting indulgence that actually serves a purpose. Beyond the smoothie, I've found that incorporating other period-friendly foods into my diet makes a huge difference. Leafy greens like spinach and kale are packed with magnesium and iron, especially important if you experience heavy bleeding. Fatty fish like salmon, rich in omega-3s, are another great option. I also swear by ginger tea for its anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea benefits. And honestly, staying hydrated with plenty of water is incredibly underrated for combating bloating and generally feeling better. On the flip side, I’ve noticed that certain foods can make my cramps worse. In my personal experience, cutting back on highly processed foods, excessive sugar, and sometimes even too much caffeine during my period really helps. These can sometimes exacerbate inflammation and lead to more discomfort. It’s all about listening to your body and figuring out what works best for you. Making this smoothie, combined with these dietary adjustments, has truly transformed my period experience from dread to much more manageable relief.
