Tried to replicate @annaemiliastudio ‘s style for the cover image of her coloring book Sweet Night 🌙
This book was printed in a different Amazon location than my other books and I can tell that the quality is a bit different, which made blending on this page difficult. I’m still happy with how it turned out though in the end.

Diving into an Anna Emilia coloring book, especially her Sweet Night collection, is always a magical experience. Her art transports you to whimsical worlds, filled with serene animals like the brown bear and green frog, nestled among pink lotus flowers and purple bellflowers under a starry night sky with a glorious full moon. When I first started this piece, trying to capture that signature soft, dreamy look, I encountered a common challenge many colorists face: paper quality. The original post mentioned how the paper from a different Amazon print location made blending difficult. This is a real struggle, and I've been there! For those moments when the paper isn't as cooperative, don't despair! I've found a few tricks that can help. Firstly, for markers, especially alcohol markers like Ohuhu (which I adore!), using a very light hand and building up layers slowly is key. Instead of pressing hard for saturation, do multiple thin layers. If the paper is very absorbent or prone to bleeding, try working in smaller sections. You can also experiment with a barrier spray or even a very thin coat of gesso if you're feeling adventurous, though that changes the paper texture significantly. Another tip is to use colored pencils for the final details and blending over markers, as they offer more control on tricky surfaces. Replicating Anna Emilia's delicate style often means focusing on soft gradients and ethereal lighting. For the brown bear in the pink lotus, I aimed for gentle shading that suggested fur rather than harsh lines. For the purple hat and pink wings, I used lighter shades and blended carefully to maintain that whimsical feel. The green frog on its lily pad needed a vibrant but natural green, with subtle highlights to make it pop against the water. The backgrounds in Sweet Night are just as important as the foreground subjects. Creating that starry night sky requires a bit of patience. I started with a deep indigo base, then added lighter blues and purples, blending them softly. For the stars, a white gel pen or a speckling technique with white acrylic paint can create that magical twinkle. Don't forget the full moon – a soft halo of light around it really enhances the nighttime effect. The water reflecting the sky can be achieved with horizontal strokes of slightly desaturated blues and purples, giving it a serene, still quality. My general approach to coloring Anna Emilia's illustrations, whether it's the lotus flowers or the bellflowers, is to embrace the softness. Think pastels, gentle contrasts, and a touch of magic. Don't be afraid to experiment with different mediums. While markers offer vibrant results, colored pencils can give you incredible control for blending and fine details, perfect for her intricate designs. Ultimately, the goal is to enjoy the creative process and let the enchantment of her art inspire your own unique touch. Happy coloring!
