As a lash technician, one of the most frequent challenges I encounter is maintaining lash retention for clients who are side sleepers. From my experience, side sleeping can significantly affect how long eyelash extensions last because it causes friction between the lashes and the pillow, leading to premature lash fallout. When retention looks poor, as many lash techs can relate to, it’s often not because of the application but rather how the client sleeps. Despite applying lashes perfectly, I’ve noticed clients returning sooner than expected for fills when they habitually rest their faces on one side at night. This wear and tear from sleeping disrupts the adhesive bond and can flatten or damage lashes. To help combat this issue, I recommend a few practical tips based on my experience. Firstly, suggesting clients try sleeping on their back when possible can drastically improve retention. If changing sleep position isn’t feasible, using a silk or satin pillowcase can reduce friction and minimize lash damage. Additionally, educating clients on avoiding rubbing their eyes or tugging at lashes during sleep can make a big difference. Another helpful approach is to customize the type of lash adhesive and lash curls used for clients who are side sleepers. Some adhesives are more flexible and resilient, which may help lashes stay intact longer despite the sleep position. Using slightly less dramatic lash curls that are less prone to bending or breaking under pressure can also extend wear time. Ultimately, understanding the relationship between sleep habits and lash retention helps me provide better service and manage client expectations. Sharing these tips with my clients has improved their satisfaction and reduced frustration for both parties. Lash retention issues are common in the industry, but with patience and communication, they become manageable. I hope other lash techs and clients find these insights as relatable and useful as I do.
