I RENOUNCED MY MALAYSIAN CITIZENSHIP: a guide💫
Hi guys!
I’ve recently turned 21 so i received a letter from ICA to renounce my malaysian citizenship! I posted on my igs about me doing my hair after renouncing the citizenship and a few of you guys asked me about the process etc (WHICH IS SUPER TEDIOUS BRUH) so i decided to make a post in case it can help anyone out there<3 I made so many mistakes lol so you guys can learn from mine.
When you first receive the letter, i read many posts online saying you need to make an appt via email to the malaysia embassy. I wrote 2 emails to them and waited for 2 months but no reply so i was like f it imma just walk in. End up they don’t even check if you have an appointment which is great!
📄 WHAT YOU NEED TO PREPARE FOR YOUR TRIP TO MALAYSIA EMBASSY :
- BLACK pen
- letter from ICA (original & 2 photocopies)
- Malaysia IC (original & 2 photocopies)
- Singapore IC (original & 2 photocopies)
- Birth cert (original & 2 photocopies)
- Cash of at least 100RM to be safe!
- Singapore citizenship certificate (original & 2 photocopies)
- Singapore passport (original & 2 photocopies)
- Malaysian passport (they said i was supposed to bring this but i don’t have it anymore and the officers didn’t rlly care so it’s not a must i think!)

🇲🇾 What to do in JB :
1. Grab from JB Customs to JPN should cost around 20-30RM. It’s 11km from customs, i booked the wrong location cause there were two similar named places😅
2. Once you reach, walk along the road and look for Block 2, JPN and stay on the ground floor. Enter the building and near the entrance, there should be a kiosk machine and click 'warganegaraan' (should be the second option from the top). You should be called from counter 1 to 4.
3. When your number is called, they will check for all the documents and pass you 2x Borang-K form (need fill up twice) and ask you to fill it up, go to Pesuruhjaya Sumpah to commision your oath. I saw some tips online saying to fill it up before hand via their templates because it’s in malay so you can save time on the day itself but i translated some stuff wrongly SO unluckily i had to go back to get another paper. AND GUESS WHAT i waited 2 hours for my number to be called and by then it was alr 1:50+pm (they close from 2-3pm) When i went down to commission my oath, the lady told me to go get a new copy of the Borang-K cause i filled up some stuff wrongly. So my advice? JUST go straight to Pesuruhjaya Sumpah, they will help you fill up the form.
3. At the blue building which is right across JPN, you can take your photographs there for the Borang K with blue background. It’ll cost 10rm. If you’re unsure where to go you can just ask the officers standing around outside they were quite friendly!
4. Find Pesuruhjaya Sumpah [Persuruhjaya_Sumpah]. It’s right beside the photo taking place. She will help you validate your document and sign it for you. Pay her RM20 in cash. ** Her shop closes at 3pm so plan your time wisely!
5. Return back to JPN and get a new queue number and click 'warganergaraan' again. Hand all the documents over including the newly filled Borang K. You will have to pay RM10 in card (or you can try your luck and see if the officer would accept your RM10 in cash and pay for you in card) and they will process it for you and give you a document evidence to prove that you have renounced your Malaysian citizenship.
6. The officer will take your birth cert and they will return to you in 8-10 months time. You can chose to collect it in sg’s malaysia embassy or JB’s malaysia embassy. Idky my dumbahh told her i’ll collect it in JB lol bruh..
🇸🇬 BACK IN SG :
After you have the document evidence that you have renounced, you could proceed to ICA immediately (the next few days) with the relevant documents. When you reach ICA you can get a queue number for your oath taking, it’ll say 120 mins but honestly i only queued for 15 mins max. Just need to do the oath taking, sign a couple of forms and submit a form to renew your passport. p.s you don’t need to print passport photo lol it’s submitted online. i wasted $17 knn. Anyway you can renew your passport for free and they will reimburse your 9 years.

Also, although some online advice suggests making appointments, I experienced that walking in without prior booking was acceptable, saving me time and stress. Just remember to maintain proper dress code—no shorts, singlets, or slippers—to meet formal requirements. One tip I’d highly recommend is to seek assistance in filling out the Borang-K form at the Pesuruhjaya Sumpah office on-site rather than attempting to pre-fill it yourself. The form is in Malay and prone to errors, which can trip you up as it did me. The costs are modest, but bring cash for things like photos (around 10 RM), oath commissioning (20 RM), and administrative fees (10 RM). Also, consider travel logistics: getting from customs to the JPN building is about 20-30 RM via Grab, so budget accordingly. After completing the renunciation at Johor Bahru, submitting your evidence to Singapore’s ICA can avoid passport fees and facilitate updating your citizenship status. Though I haven’t completed that step myself yet, it’s promising to know this can be done shortly after renunciation. Overall, my advice for anyone considering this path is to prepare thoroughly, be patient during waiting times, and don’t hesitate to ask for help from the embassy staff—they were quite friendly and supportive throughout my visit. Sharing my journey here hoping it saves others from unnecessary mistakes and makes an overwhelming process a bit simpler!
Hi I think it’s different for different converts! My brother was born in msia while I was born in SG, he got to renounce in SG’s malaysian embassy with his msia IC and birth cert whereas for me I had to go all the way to JB! Just a note for everyone but dont take my word for it!!
