Most runners don’t lose the race at the end…👇

They lose it in the first half without realizing it.

1️⃣ Start with control, not emotion.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement. Run your race, not the pace of everyone around you.

2️⃣ Stay relaxed early.

Relaxed shoulders, steady breathing, and smooth form help you save energy for when it matters most.

3️⃣ Set yourself up to finish strong.

The goal of the first half isn’t to prove how fast you are—it’s to give yourself the best chance to attack the second half.

Great racers think ahead.

Every decision you make in the opening minutes affects how you’ll feel when it’s time to compete for places.

Run smart early.

Finish strong late.

... Read moreWhen I first started running competitively, I used to pour all my energy into the beginning of the race, fueled by excitement and adrenaline. However, I often found myself fading dramatically in the later stages, realizing too late that I had burned out too soon. This experience taught me the importance of pacing and mental control, which aligns perfectly with the advice shared here. Focusing on controlling your emotions at the start can be game-changing. Instead of reacting to other runners’ speeds, running your own pace helps conserve energy. Early in a race, I make it a habit to check my breathing and keep my shoulders relaxed—simple cues that keep my form efficient and prevent tension that can sap stamina. Another key is the mindset when approaching the first half of the race. Rather than trying to prove how fast I am early on, my goal now is to preserve my strength for the final push. Thinking ahead to the race’s end helps me stay disciplined and confident. The phrase "If you’re apart at the end," interpreted as being mentally or physically separated from competitors, resonates deeply. Training to stay composed can prevent this isolation by ensuring you have the energy to compete when it counts. Additionally, investing in the right gear—like quality socks and shoes, as mentioned—really makes a difference in comfort and performance. Over the years, I’ve found that these small details enhance endurance and reduce risks of injury. For runners of all levels, especially youth, adopting a strategic approach that emphasizes control, relaxation, and pacing can elevate your race outcomes. Not only does this method help physically, but it also builds mental strength that keeps you focused when stakes are high. In summary, running smart from the start sets you up to finish strong. It’s a lesson I’ve learned firsthand and continue to apply for better races and personal bests.

🗣️ Listen, running isn’t supposed to feel easy when you’re starting. You’re teaching your body and mind something brand new. Don’t worry about speed, don’t worry about distance, just focus on showing up and moving forward. Even if you run for 30 seconds and walk for 2 minutes, you’re still a runner
